During her first weekend in college, she was on a date when she struck up a conversation with another guy that has lasted 54 years. They moved to Madera in 1978 from Roswell, New Mexico, leaving behind aliens who had crash-landed in 1947. Allegedly.

The Madera County Probation Department hired Cathy to investigate the care provided to court-appointed conservatees through the Madera County Public Guardian. She earned her master’s degree in marriage and family counseling at Fresno State to become Madera County’s first Family Court Services mediator in child custody court disputes. She loves people.

Cathy raised two Madera-born sons, Ian and Dylan. She coached soccer, served as a Cub Scouts volunteer, and supported their participation in academic decathlons. She is still Mom four decades later. Cathy now grandmothers two young boys, including valiantly striving to balance the questionable example set by their Madera grandfather.

Cathy’s lineage includes Choctaw and Cheyenne Indians. Her relatives fought for America during the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War, both World Wars, Korea, and in Vietnam.

She loved working with kids as a Madera Unified School District high school counselor. Some of them, now parents themselves, stop her in town to catch-up.

Cathy has served as the president of four local nonprofit, volunteer organizations. She volunteers through the 145-year-old American Association of University Women (AAUW). The local chapter raises money to help fund college scholarships for Madera County girls. Cathy has led the local chapter of California Retired Teachers, CalRTA, advocating for and protecting educators’ pensions and benefits and the local PEO Sisterhood chapter (Philanthropic Educational Organization), serving its 100-plus year mission to help women achieve their educational goals. And she was president of the Madera County Child Abuse Prevention Council.

Cathy’s reputation is one of kindness. She puts others before herself. She does not seek attention. Serving has been more important than merely joining. But she repeatedly is placed in positions of leadership in our community because she works hard, enables decisions by consensus, and gets things done.

She is an avid supporter of local arts through the Madera County Arts Council, high school plays, and the Madera Theatre Project. She enjoys the San Joaquin Valley Town Hall lecture series. Cathy especially loves watching musicals with family through the Fresno Broadway series. She’s seen more than 250 concerts including Led Zeppelin, Ray Charles, Santana, Adele, Reba McIntyre, U2, Chris Stapleton, the Rolling Stones, Kenny Chesney, Bruce Springsteen, Gladys Knight, the Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Van Halen, Brooks & Dunn, The Who, Johnny Cash, and the Eagles.

Cathy has photographed Yosemite Valley, walked on the Great Wall of China, wrestled a lobster off the coast of Maine, ridden camels in Egypt and Morocco, watched the Lion King on Broadway, and river-rafted in Costa Rica.

Cathy Wieland ‘s life is a well-lived American story as she has enriched the lives of others in our community.

Cathy Wieland has been a quiet, selfless, and effective Madera leader for 48 years… at home, on the job, and through her volunteer service. Torres has won four of the five Rodeo Bowl meetings.

Torres’ rushing game almost out gained the Madera South offense. Lead running back Caden Warden carried 23 times for 198 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown. His back-up, Angel De La Sancha, broke off a 49-yard run, and scored a touchdown. The Toros gained 260 yards on the ground against Madera South’s 265 total yards.

The Stallions had six different ball carriers tote the ball 48 times for 180 yards with a touchdown. Quarterback John Ledesma threw for 85 yards and a score.

Diego Reyna Navarro carried 18 times for 62 yards, and a score while Ledesma called his own number 16 times for 83 yards.

The Stallions opened the game with a drive into Torres territory, but had to punt.

Three plays later, Ledesma picked off a Torres pass to set the Stallions up at the Torres 20.

Reyna Navarro and Ledesma carried for 10 yards. An offisdes call gave Madera South a first down. Three plays later, Reyna Navarro scored from two yards out, and Michael Cuevas hit the extra point for a 7-0 lead with three minutes left in the first.

The Toros answered right back. Joseph Pasillas carried for eight, and Warden gained 11 on third-and-two.

From the Madera South 43, Nathaniel Pichardo found an open Jordan Garcia up the middle. Garcia blew past his defender on a seam route from the slot for a 43-yard touchdown catch. The point after was missed, and Madera South led, 7-6, with 1:28 left in the first quarter.

After Madera South turned the ball over on downs, Torres took the ball inside the Stallions’ 30. Elijah Chavez read the Torres middle screen, and picked off Pichardo to stop the drive.

Ledesma ran for six for an initial first down, but the Stallions punted at midfield.

The Toros got a 15-yard run from Warden and Pichardo hit Darryn Garcia for 14 yards to get into Stallions’ territory. Warden gained eight, and then found running room to the left. He went behind the blocks of Alfredo Diaz, Joseph Razo and Pasillas for a 34-yard gain.

However, Torres mishandled the hand-off two plays later, and Madera South’s Charles Moore came up with the recovery.

The Stallions started a drive with 3:51 left in the half. Ledesma and Reyna Navarro gained 18 yards. Ledesma hit Cuevas for eight yards, and a first down. Ledesma carried for 10 to the Torres 39.

Two Ledesma runs moved the ball to the Torres 28. Two incomplete passes ended the half.

Torres opened the second half with the ball at its 38. Warden got the ball up the middle, and went behind a Ramon Espinoza block to find running room. Warden outran the defense down the right sideline for a 62-yard run. Hector Diaz’s kick was good for a 13-7 lead, just 17 seconds into the half.

The Stallions came right back. After George Roberts carried for four on third-and-three, the Stallions moved the ball into Torres territory.

Ledesma threw a quick tight end pop pass to A.J. Alvarez, who got behind the Torres defense. Alvarez carried the ball the final 33 yards into the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown after Cuevas hit the extra point for a 14-13 Madera South lead.

Warden got the call four straight times for 12 yards to open the next Torres drive. De La Sancha came in relief of Warden, and found running room behind Razo and Richard Galindo for a 49-yard gain around the left side. De La Sancha was given a chance to finish what he started, and scored from two-yards out to give the Toros the lead.

Pasillas scored on an end around for the two-point conversion, and a 21-14 Torres lead with 5:06 left in the third quarter.

The Stallions went on a seven minute drive that didn’t lead to any points. Roberts, Ledesma and Reyna Navarro moved the ball to the Torres 26. However, two Madera South penalties forced the Stallions to a third-and-26. A Ledesma pass to Cuevas gained eight, but the fourth down pass fell incomplete, and the 14-play drive didn’t result in points.

The Toros faced a third-and-two, but a bad snap forced De La Sancha to cover the ball for a loss of four. Then, a bad snap to the punter forced a punt for a loss of four at the Torres 44.

Reyna Navarro gained six and Ledesma found Jonathan Buendia for 12 yards to the 32. Reyna Navarro, behind block from Cuevas and Alvarez, gained 11 to the 21.

After a tackle for loss, Ledesma scrambled twice for eight yards. On fourth-and-six, Alfredo Diaz provided the Torres pressure, and Ledesma threw incomplete to turn the ball over with 3:23 left in the game.

The Toros turned to their closer, Warden. However, Von Flue hit his 200 yards on just six passes, and three of those passes went for touchdowns.

Henry Bilskey and Tyler McCamey each gained more than 120 yards to lead a 336-yard rushing attack. McCamey scored two rushing touchdowns and caught one. Bilskey also caught one and ran one in.

The Hawks gained 536 yards of total offense, and averaged 9.9 yards per play. Meanwhile, Firebaugh gained 306 yards, and averaged 6.9 yards per play. Liberty was also hit with 13 penalties for 135 yards.

The Liberty defense forced two fumbles and had a Brody Wilhelm interception to go with four quarterback sacks.

Firebaugh opened the game, and surprised the Hawks. The Eagles popped a kick in front of the Liberty return team, and came up with the recovery.

The Eagles got an initial first down to the Liberty 20. Firebaugh threw incomplete on fourth down, but a penalty gave the Eagles a first down at the 11. On the next play, Firebaugh fumbled on a tackle by Brody Sisco and Bilskey recovered.

After fumbling the first snap of the game, Von Flue found Austin Graham for a 22-yard gain to start the drive. Tristan Ruiz and McCamey gained 13 yards, and Von Flue hit Tye Davis for 12 yards, and a first down.

Bilskey and Ruiz carried six times to the Firebaugh one. However, on fourth-and-goal, Bilskey was stuffed for no gain.

Wilhelm and Blayz Ketchum stuffed Firebaugh for no gain on first down. Firebaugh went back to pass on second down, and the quarterback ran into Ketchum, and turned around to get flattened by Sisco for a safety with 1:50 left in the first quarter.

McCamey and Bilskey gave the Hawks a first down. Liberty was hit with a personal foul penalty, and Von Flue was sacked for a seven-yard loss to bring up second-and-30. Two plays later, Von Flue found an open McCamey on a seam route up the middlefor a 54-yard touchdown with 11:11 left in the first half.

Firebaugh got a third down conversion on another Liberty penalty, but Deegan Shandor sacked the Firebaugh quarterback on fourth down.

McCamey got an initial Liberty first down. On second-and-eight, Bilskey gained 28 to the 18-yard line. Two plays later, Bilskey found the end zone from 14 yards out for a 16-0 lead.

Firebaugh got two first down runs on its next drive, and closed out the drive with a pass over the middle from 33 yards out for a 16-6 lead with three minutes left in the half.

Bilskey opened the next Liberty drive with a 12-yard gain. Three plays later, Von Flue hit Bilskey up the seam for a 46-yard touchdown, and a 23-6 lead with 1:54 left in the first half.

Firebaugh got an initial first down to start the next drive, but the first half ended.

Firebaugh opened the second half with a 54-yard pass completion to cut Liberty’s lead to 11 a little more than a minute into the third quarter.

The Hawks came right back. Three plays into the next drive, McCamey got the ball on the right side, made his way through the second level, and outran the Eagles’ defense for a 69-yard touchdown run, and a 30-12 lead a little more than a minute after Firebaugh’s score.

The Eagles converted a third-and-12 with a 15-yard pass, and then got a 10-yard run. A Liberty penalty gave the Eagles the ball at the 15. Two plays later, though, Firebaugh fumbled, and Benni Lounbandith came up with the recovery.

The Hawks turned the fumble into points. McCamey, Ruiz and Bilskey ran first downs on three straight plays for 44 yards to the Firebaugh 19.

McCamey got the hand-off around the right side and went into the end zone for a touchdown with 1:47 left in the third.

Two plays into the next Firebaugh drive, Wilhelm stepped in front of an Eagles’ pass for an interception.

On the next play, Von Flue found a wide-open Graham. Graham caught the pass at the Eagles’40, and ran down the right sideline. He eluded an Eagles’ defender at the 10, and ran into the end zone for a 66-yard touchdown reception with 24 seconds left in the third. Carter Imperatrice hit his sixth point after for a 44-12 lead.

From there, the Hawks sent in their reserves. The Eagles scored a touchdown with 4:46 left in the game, but the Hawks ran out the clock to end the game. The final 17 Liberty plays were runs, and gained 63 yards.

Liberty finally gets to play at home Friday night in a Senior Night match-up with Mendota. Although they allowed Bullard’s leading rusher to gain more than 100 yards, it took 24 carries to get there. Bullard was limited to 15 rushes of two yards or fewer. The Bullard quarterback threw 17 incompletions and an interception.

After Madera punted to open the game, Bullard went for it on fourth-and-one from its 36-yard line. Zach Prince broke through from the outside to stop Bullard for no gain.

It only took Madera one play to capitalize. Smith got the hand off up the middle, and bounced it to the right for a 36-yard touchdown run, and a 7-0 lead after the first of eight Carlos Ochoa extra points.

Bullard got two 17-yard pass plays to get into Madera territory, and scored on a 38-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven.

Madera took the ensuing kick-off to the 45, and marched into Bullard territory. Mena hit Smith on a quick slant going to the right, and Smith went into the end zone for a 14-7 lead.

Brian Qualls sacked the Bullard quarterback to force a punt. The punt snap went over the punter’s head. The punter got the ball away for just four yards.

The Coyotes marched from there. Mena carried three straight times to the Bullard 15. He gained eight on third-and-five from the 15. Smith and Mena took the ball to the one, and Martinez scored out of the wildcat on fourth-and-goal for a 21-7 lead.

Bullard got an initial first down, but faced a fourth-and-one from its 47. Brian Guzman and Martinez broke in for a tackle for loss to give the Coyotes the ball in Bullard territory.

Flores gained 11 on an end around. Two Smith carries gained 16 yards to the Bullard 20. Mena hit Perez for a 16-yard gain. After Smith was tackled for a seven-yard loss, Mena found Perez wide-open in the corner of the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

The Knights scored on the first play of the next drive, but a holding penalty was called down the field. On the next play, from midfield, Bullard fumbled, and Prince recovered at the Bullard 45.

The Coyotes went into their bag of tricks and called for a halfback pass. Smith threw down field to a wide-open Flores for the touchdown, and 35-7 lead.

Bullard drove down the field before halftime. Near midfield, Bullard got three runs for 19 yards, and a reverse pass for 14. The Knights scored with a seven-yard run up the middle for a 35-14 Madera lead at the half.

The Knights got an initial first down to start the second half, highlighted by a 31-yard pass. Facing a fourth down, Bullard got a pass interference penalty, and scored two plays later to cut Madera’s lead to 35-21.

The Coyotes had to punt, but the Madera defense stiffened in the red zone for a fourth down incomplete pass.

On third-and-five from the 36, Mena hit Perez on a crossing route at the 40. Perez took it down the left sideline for a 49-yard gain to the Bullard five.

Mena hit Flores from five yards out for the touchdown and a 41-21 lead after the point after was wide.

Bullard came right back, and on the second play of the fourth quarter, scored from a yard out to cut the lead to 41-28. Bullard was helped by the third of five pass interference penalty called against Madera in the second half.

Madera came back right down the field. After Mena was sacked for a loss of 10, he completed three straight passes. Two went to Martinez for 21 yards and another to Flores for five.

On fourth-and-three, Mena hit Martinez for eight yards, and then scrambled down the left side for a 24-yard gain to the 10.

Mena hit Martinez for seven, and Smith went up the middle for the final three yards for a 48-28 lead.

After Madera’s fourth pass interference penalty of the second half, the Coyotes got revenge. Adam Ornelas stepped in front of a Bullard receiver, who was going to the ground, for an interception at the Madera 40. He cut across from the left down the right sideline for a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown to give the Coyotes a 55-28 lead.

Bullard was aided by another pass interference penalty, but had to punt.

Two plays later, Smith went through a huge hole on the right side, and got a downfield block from Flores for a 76-yard game-clinching touchdown run to open a 62-28 lead.

Bullard drove the ball inside the Madera 30, but time ran out for Madera’s first win over Bullard in 12 years.

The Madera Coyotes football team did something that hasn’t been done in more than 12 years — take down the Bullard Knights. The key word here is illegal.

The actions of the previous administration created a major problem in this country by allowing millions and millions of people to storm our borders, illegally, and create many issues for our country.

They also reversed every program that was put in place to control illegal immigration, including the Remain in Mexico program which allowed people to come in, apply for asylum, then return to their home country, a program that worked.

Whether it was done on purpose is a topic that I have my opinions on, but since there are a few people that wrongly think that people should not have opinions unless they are based on fact, I will refrain from sharing them.

I have always been in favor of immigration of the legal sort, as we are a nation of immigrants, ones that have chosen the legal way. I have also been in favor of programs that helped our farmers to harvest their crops. But the ones that came across the border years ago to work usually made it a habit to obey the rules of the program and returned to their home country.

I hear all the time about people being deported that have decided to violate the terms of the work visa and choose to remain in the country, again, illegally. However, my being in favor of immigration has wavered as our country has made a priority to financially assist individuals that have come in, at the same time we have a homeless population that continues to grow.

Recent reports say as many as 700,000 people in the country have experienced homelessness, many receiving no help whatsoever. We also have a big number of Veterans of our military that are going without services. It’s been reported by the Center for Immigrant Studies that a majority of immigrants allowed into the country use one or more of the major welfare programs, money that could be spent on the homeless and veterans.

I firmly believe that all immigration programs be put to a halt until we get our people, the citizens of the United States, taken care of. We have all heard of some of the abuses of the programs and the fraud that has been committed which has been very costly for our government. It’s also been reported that more than $700 million in cash has been flagged by TSA as taken out of the country by one particular class of immigrants throughout a two year period — the same class that has been accused of some of the major fraudulent activity.

It’s a common occurrence where people are insisting that our government officials speak out against the efforts of ICE to deport people here illegally. Our elected officials have to uphold the laws of the land and help ensure the safety of their citizens. Many have chosen to violate their oath and do whatever they can to block the efforts. Many police departments have chosen to not cooperate with ICE. I guess the goal to serve and protect is being taken lightly.

My big question, and I have asked it many times without an answer, is, “Why do people think it’s ok for people to cross the border, illegally, and insist that they be able to remain here?” We are a country of laws and all of a sudden, on the topic of illegal immigration, people think laws should be ignored. This peaceful routine is shattered when Plum Dixon arrives at her door. Initially, Lottie fears that Plum is a reporter, but the situation is worse than that. Plum wants to make a docuseries of Lottie’s previous life. Plum explains that she is interested in telling the true story of a woman who was wrongly accused of killing several people.

Lottie, previously known as Lorena Mae Lansdale, does not want her previous life to be reexamined for obvious reasons. Her past is littered with dozens, maybe hundreds, of dead bodies, and she can’t take a chance on having her life reexamined. Unfortunately, Plum’s curiosity and persistence forces Lottie to come out of retirement. Now Lottie, who is often criticized by the food monitor at church for bringing “store-bought” platters to Bingo Night, has to contend with cooking and baking as well as cleaning up blood and disposing of body parts.

Then, she has to deal with a local detective who is blackmailing her and a retired cop in her old haunts who is obsessed with getting the goods on her.
