Long-time General Builder\u2019s Supply owner Dennis Smith has been selected to be the 2026 Grand Marshal of the Old Timers\u2019 Parade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith was born in Los Banos. His mother was born in Madera, and his father had moved to Madera, where they met and got married eight years before Smith was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His dad had accepted a job in Los Banos, so the couple moved there for four years, during which time Dennis was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Smith was three, his dad accepted a job back in Madera, and went to work for Emilio Pistoresi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith has no memory of living in Los Banos, but remembers his first six months of living in Madera. They lived just around the corner from his school, John Adams Elementary. He graduated from Madera High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After high school, Smith attended Fresno City College for a little while, but did not get a degree at that time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was independent. I wanted to do my own thing. When I turned 18, I couldn\u2019t wait to move out. I did not like being told what to do and how to do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He worked in Fresno for the Ford truck dealer for 20 years, in the parts department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afterwards, he began working at General Builders Supply (GBS), where his dad was part owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy dad and I talked about me buying that other partner out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1995, Smith purchased one-third of GBS. At the time, there were three partners \u2014 his dad, Carl Wisener, and Jamie Leson. Smith bought Leson\u2019s share. Several years later, Carl wanted to sell. So, then Smith owned it with his dad and it became a family business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith\u2019s mother passed away last year, and his dad died in 2022. After the passing of his parents, Smith\u2019s brother sold out his share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith said it has been a good business over the years, but when Home Depot came to Madera, in 2004, it began to change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe best year we had was in 2003, and then Home Depot opened in 2004. I can\u2019t remember the numbers, but it was big. Today we\u2019re doing about 60 percent of the business we were doing before Home Depot,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then Lowe\u2019s came a couple years later, and that didn\u2019t affect us at all. I always say, competition makes you stronger, but it\u2019s really not the same.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that GBS is still good for those who are doing small jobs at home, like repairing a faucet, but if you\u2019re going to remodel your kitchen, and you\u2019re doing most of the work yourself, you\u2019re going to end up at Home Depot or Lowe\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf you need to get small stuff, a hose bib, an electrical outlet, come to GBS. You\u2019re going to spend less money for the product, and you\u2019re going to get in and out a lot faster and a lot easier,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is very thankful for Ariel Rivera, the general manager at GBS, who was also honored at the Lifetime Achievement Awards dinner this year with a 4 Around 40 Award. Rivera has been managing the store, and has become quite an asset to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith is the father of one son and one daughter, neither living in Madera. Chad lives in Modesto, and daughter Erin lives in San Diego. He has five grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked why he thinks he was selected to be the 2026 Grand Marshal, Smith replied, \u201cI don\u2019t know. Nobody told me we picked you because\u2026 But it\u2019s been my philosophy that you\u2019re not a customer, you\u2019re a neighbor. So, the way I feel about it is if you\u2019re brought into this community, be invested. You shop locally. You do things locally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith has been involved in the community through Kiwanis, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, ADA Advisory Council, and other outreach. He was a Boy Scout as a youth, and he has a solid philosophy about investing in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo I say, and then I think about it, if you\u2019re not an asset to the community, then you\u2019re likely a burden on the community,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you complain about trash on the sidewalk, do you do anything about it? Because there\u2019s somebody that dropped that. And when I go to the post office, if I see a candy wrapper laying on the sidewalk outside the door, I\u2019ll pick it up. And when I get inside, I\u2019ll put it in the trash can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s broken, needs to be fixed, and it\u2019s not up to somebody else. Why can\u2019t I help? You\u2019re at the gas station, and you\u2019re putting gas in your car, and while you\u2019re standing there, there\u2019s a cigarette butt laying on the ground. Yeah. That person that dropped that cigarette wasn\u2019t thinking about it, and I think they\u2019re nasty to touch, but I\u2019m holding a gas pump that…\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His one regret is that he wishes he had gone back to college, but he has made an impact in this community, and he cares for it so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLike I said, if you\u2019re not an asset to the community, then… What\u2019s the old saying?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pay your bills, wear deodorant. And do unto others, right? \u201cI care about the community. One of the biggest parts of our lives right now is the church where we go. It\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ila Schoettler has been chosen to reign as Queen of 2026 Old Timers Day on Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her coronation ceremony will be at the Madera Old Timers\u2019 Dinner and Silent Auction at the Elks Lodge, 112 W. 6th Street, Friday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most people think of Ila as a native Maderan, but she was born in Jasper, Alabama, in 1934. Both her parents came from large families. Her father was one of 11 children. Her mother was one of 10 children. Ila had only one brother, James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cordes family of four moved to Madera in 1949 when Ila was nine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was after the war, and her parents had worked in the cotton mill together in Alabama, but there was not much work available. Her dad was promised a job in California at El Peco Ranch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy brother went back after he retired from the service. He took his family with six children. He took them all back to Alabama,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every year, she goes back to Alabama for reunions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like we have the whole town at our reunions.\u201d she said as she showed a picture of a huge crowd of people related to her in Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After moving to California, Ila attended La Vina, but she changed schools many times. The first one in town was Pershing, and then Lincoln. The last grammar school she attended was Howard School before going in as a freshman at Madera High, which was called Madera Union High School at that time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI graduated in 1952, and I got married in June of 1953, a year after I graduated,\u201d she said. \u201cRight out of high school, I went to work at McCumber Drugstore, waiting on customers. I was already engaged. I got engaged in high school when I was a senior,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She married Tom Schoettler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked if she went to college, she said, \u201cWe had no money for college. I wanted to be an attorney so bad because I loved Perry Mason.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tom was from Fresno, attending San Joaquin Memorial. He moved to Madera when he was a junior. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut I didn\u2019t know him at all in school. I didn\u2019t meet him until after he graduated,\u201d Ila said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tom\u2019s dad had a gas station on the corner of the old freeway, what is now called Gateway and Yosemite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tom joined the Navy, and was stationed in South Laguna, so eventually Ila moved down there to be with him. It was there that their first child was conceived, Terry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI went there, and Tom and one of his buddies had already gone around and found a house. Tom was just as anxious for me to come as I was to go,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the time Terry was born, they were back in Madera. All together, Tom and Ila had five sons, Terry, Tim, Keith, Kenny, and Ron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All five sons live in Madera, and have raised children in the community. Ila boasts a total of 50 grandchildren and great grandchildren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ila has had a variety of jobs over the years. She worked at McMahan\u2019s Furniture Store for 12 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s where I was so shy,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She explained that she was too shy to talk with customers, and so her coworkers would tease her about her shyness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI had four of my children while I was working. When they opened their store in Fresno, they sent me down there, but I had five kids at home. I was a nervous wreck, wondering if I would get home,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd Tom would come home and complain about the babysitter. He said, \u2018The kids were on the roof.\u2019 And he said that one of the boys was running around with a snotty nose. He said, \u2018So I fired her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While she was working at McMahan\u2019s, her mother and her husband became the babysitters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ila really wanted to stay home with the children, but she had to go to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201dI wanted to be a mother. I wanted to play with them, and grow up with them, but I had to work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She went to work in 1960 at Dearborn Hospital in the billing department, and worked there for five years before the new hospital (Madera Community Hospital) was built. She decided to retire, but then got called back to work. She answered the phone and gave directions, and did other tasks as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey turned the job into a full-time job, and then I\u2019m stuck. I retired again at the other hospital. And guess what? \u2018Can you just stay and work a few days a week and do this job?\u2019 I worked every department except the kitchen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was at Dearborn Hospital for just five years, and the rest of the time was at MCH. She enjoyed her work there because of the variety of work she did. She thought it was interesting and fun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said she didn\u2019t fully retire until she was 87. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now, she enjoys spending time visiting people. She has several friends who live at Cedar Creek, and others living in retirement places in Fresno. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also enjoys visiting her family, wherever they may be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three of her sons work at Schoettler Tire, the business started by their grandfather. She explained how it all got started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTom\u2019s dad had a tire place in Fresno, and Mr. Harrington and my father-in-law got together and became partners. Harrington and Schoettler is what it was called. So, it became the tire and gas station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Mr. Harrington died, his widow sold Harrington\u2019s part to Tom\u2019s father, and it became Schoettler Tire,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThree of my sons work there, Tim, Terry, and Kenny,\u201d she said. \u201cRonnie drives the school bus, and he has for 20-something years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tom and Ila had been married 61 years when he passed away in 2014. She still misses him, but has a fulfilling life with all her many friends and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ila is a woman of strong faith. She was raised in the Baptist Church, but became Catholic after she was married.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The Madera County Museum will hold a free open house starting around noon on Saturday at the Old County Courthouse, 210 W. Yosemite Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The open house will be held as part of the annual Old Timers Day celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The museum houses about 21,000 historical artifacts and photos on three floors. The Old Madera County Courthouse began construction in 1900, was burned on Christmas Eve 1906 and rebuilt shortly afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The museum will open Sept. 26 immediately following the conclusion of the annual Old Timers\u2019 Day Parade in Madera. It will remain open until 2 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Old Timers Day, the museum will be open Sundays from 1-4 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Museum won \u201cgold\u201d (first place) in the annual Best of Central California contest in 2025 in the categories of \u201cBest Museum\u201d and \u201cBest Place to Volunteer.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Saturday will mark the 95th year of the Old Timers\u2019 Day Parade, beginning at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leading this year\u2019s parade as Grand Marshal will be a long-time business owner, Dennis Smith. Accompanying him as the Honorable Queen of the Parade will be lifelong Madera resident and business owner Ila Schoettler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s memorial honoree will be in memory of longtime Downtown Madera Business owner Jeff Cerioni, of Cerioni\u2019s Men\u2019s and Ladies wear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year will also feature a new honoree category, the \u201cMadera Young Trailblazer.\u201d This year\u2019s honoree will be R.C. Chahal, who has played an integral role in the success of Madtown Robotics Team 1323, helping lead the team to an impressive four World Championship titles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to ongoing State Route 145 improvements in Downtown Madera, this year\u2019s parade will feature a new route, traveling west to east along Yosemite Avenue, beginning at P Street and Yosemite Avenue and concluding at Courthouse Park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Old Timers\u2019 Day Parade is distinguished as the hallmark of parades within Madera County and typically features 50-70 various entries from stagecoach\u2019s, firetrucks, bands, and several youth groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madison Elementary School celebrated the official ribbon cutting of its new two-story academic building on Friday, marking the expansion of its Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program into the middle school grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ribbon cutting took place before Madison\u2019s annual Resource Fair honoring Hispanic Heritage Month. The event celebrated cultural pride and connected families with community resources organized by the Madison DLI Parent Teacher Association (PTA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new facility includes 11 classrooms, additional office space, and dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Art spaces. The expansion provides additional classroom space and opportunities for hands-on learning and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The building also allows Madison to serve more than 250 DLI students in grades 6 through 8. Overall, approximately 800 Madison students participate in DLI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office is asking for the public\u2019s help locating Erik Von Richard Haumann, 33, who is wanted in connection with a violent attack that occurred on September 17 in North Fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During an argument at a residence, Haumann is suspected of attacking a 75-year-old victim for an extended period of time while threatening to kill them. The victim suffered multiple severe and permanent injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haumann is also accused of stealing the victim\u2019s vehicle following the attack. The vehicle has since been recovered in the Lemoore area. He is believed to be headed to the Santa Barbara area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A warrant has been issued for Haumann\u2019s arrest for attempted murder, torture, mayhem and robbery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harman is 5\u201911\u201d and approximately 200 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes. His whereabouts are unknown, and it is unknown whether he is armed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fall is coming to the Sierra foothills, and the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for three days of fun, entertainment and community spirit at the 2026 Oakhurst Fall Festival, October 9-11, at the Oakhurst Community Center, 39800 Road 425B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Celebrating its 33rd year, this year\u2019s festival brings the event to a new home with more space for carnival rides, food trucks, local vendors, live entertainment and family activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce will be honoring Dolly Parton on Dolly Day Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Elderberry House Patio, 48688 Victoria Lane. The event will be hosted by Women in Business, and wear pink, rhinestones and butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three days of Fall Festival<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Friday, October 9, 3-9 p.m.: Kick off the weekend with live music, food, beverages, vendors and carnival fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.: Enjoy a full day of festival activities, including Reptile Ron, who will bring an exciting and educational reptile experience for the whole family. The Main Hall will host a community stage showcasing local children and youth, from performing arts and dance to martial arts and more. Pancake Breakfast will be available from the Senior Center culinary team and Oakhurst Chamber team will be providing micheladas, mimosas, wine and beer. For the ninth straight time, the Governor\u2019s Hat is changing hands, this time to the Madera Coyotes after a 56-33 victory Friday at Toro Stadium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two schools renewed its rivalry two years ago, and the Governor\u2019s cowboy hat has switched hands every year. Madera won the first game of the renewal in 2024, 48-35, but Merced won last year, 43-34. In the past nine years, the team that has won has scored more than 40 points eight times. However, the losing team has scored more than 30 points four times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Governor\u2019s Hat game dates back to the 1955 when Governor Goodwin Knight attended a game between the two schools, and gave his cowboy hat to the winning team. Ever since, the hat has been going back and forth between the two schools with each game written on the hat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes took advantage of three early turnovers and a dominant running game to get the hat back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anthony Estrada rushed for 192 yards on 15 carries, averaging 12.8 yards per carry, and scored a receiving touchdown. Darius White rushed for 139 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns. He averaged 8.1 yards per carry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a team, the Coyotes rushed for 383 yards on 43 carries. Last week, quarterback Elias Mena threw for more than 300 yards. This week, he wasn\u2019t needed too often. He was 10-of-14 for 138 yards and three touchdowns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes gained 521 yards of total offense while Merced gained 448 with 197 on the ground and 251 in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bears opened the game with a pair of 22 yard runs, but Lawrence Flores recovered a fumble at the Coyote six, and returned it out to the 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes were forced to punt, but so did the Bears. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mena opened Madera\u2019s second drive with a 13-yard run. Four straight carries from Smith went for 39 yards, including a 23-yard run, to the Bears\u2019 one. Jayden Martinez ran it in from the wildcat for a 7-0 lead after the first of eight Carlos Ochoa extra points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bears drove inside the Madera 30 yard line after a couple of long runs. On fourth-and-five, Flores picked off a Bear\u2019s pass, and returned it 52 yards to the Merced 39-yard line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It took the Coyotes eight plays to score. Three runs by Estrada gained 18 yards to the 21. Two more Estrada runs got the Coyotes inside the 15. After Mena ran for 10 on a quarterback draw, Smith scored from two yards out after a jump cut to the left for a 14-0 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Merced gave the ball to its back four straight times for 17 yards. On the fifth carry, Jayden Silva punched the ball loose, and Matthew Prince recovered. He took the fumble 20 yards to the Merced 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith and Estrada alternated for 25 yards to the two. Mena rolled to his right, and found an opening for the touchdown, and a 21-0 lead with five minutes left in the half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bears used four pass plays to gain 52 yards, with the final 25 going into the end zone for a touchdown to cut the Coyote lead to 14. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes didn\u2019t wait too long to extend the lead. On the third play of the drive, from the Coyote 46, Smith got the carry off right tackle. He cut to the left at midfield, went behind Flores and Silva down the left sideline for a 54-yard touchdown with two minutes left in the half for a 28-7 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bears quickly drove down the field, using passes of 17 and 29 yards to get to the Madera 3. They scored on the next play, but the kick was blocked to cut Madera\u2019s lead to 28-13 at the half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes scored on the first drive of the second half. The big play was an Estrada run from the Coyote 27. He went up the middle, and cut to the left at the 33-yard line. He went down the sideline for a 63-yard gain to the 10. Two plays later, Mena found Estrada out of the backfield, and Estrada went into the left corner of the end zone for a 35-13 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bears came right back with a 28-yard run, and a 35-yard pass into the end zone to cut the lead to 15. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith carried four straight times on the next Coyote drive, gaining 19 yards with a personal foul penalty added on to the Merced 44. Estrada gained 19 yards up the middle to the 25. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mena hit Martinez for nine, and Brett Qualls for eight to the fourth. Smith, out of the wildcat, went up the middle for a four-yard touchdown. Ochoa\u2019s point after hit the left upright, and went in, for a 42-20 lead with 5:44 left in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After an initial first down, Brian Qualls and Martinez sacked the Merced quarterback. On the next play, Prince picked off a Merced pass, and returned it to midfield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the next play, Mena hit Flores on a quick slant to the right. Flores went across the field, and into the end zone for a touchdown, and a 49-20 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes\u2019 defense forced a turnover on downs on the next drive, but the Coyotes mishandled the snap, and Merced recovered at midfield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bears drove to the Madera 11 after an 11-yard pass and a pass interference penalty. Three straight incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Estrada closed out the third quarter with a run up the middle, and a bounce to the right for 27-yard gain. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Estrada did the same thing for 26 yards to the Merced 30. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three plays later, Mena hit Flores, on fourth-and-one, on the left for a first down. Flores broke a tackle at the 10, and followed Brett Qualls into the end zone for a 56-20 lead, and institute the running clock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madera South Stallions girls volleyball team had a chance to pick up its first full-match win of the season against the Washington Union Panthers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, in the end, the Stallions made too many mistakes in a 3-1 loss Thursday at Madera South. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the four sets, the Stallions recorded just 22 kills, and had one player (Angelina Alejo with six kills) record more than five kills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, they had many more mistakes. The Stallions hit 12 balls out of bounds, another 11 hit into the net and nine fall on their own end. In addition, The Stallions were called into the net six times and missed seven serves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Panthers were just a little better, but had their problems. They put down 29 kills to go with 12 aces, but missed eight serves. They also hit out of bounds 15 times and into the net another six. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind a side out kill from Seraphim Peralta, a kill from Maria Hernandez and an ace from Peralta, the Stallions took an early 4-3 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Panthers used a four-point run to take a 12-9 lead, and extended it with a three-point run, and a five-point run. In those eight points, seven were scored with Stallion errors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Panthers put the game on ice with a four-point run to get to set point. The Stallions got a push kill from Brianna Vasquez for side out, but a block on a Stallion attack gave the Panthers a 25-15 win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the second set, the Stallions took advantage of Washington Union errors to grab the early lead. After a Peralta side out kill, three Panthers\u2019 errors tied the set at five. After the Panthers took a 9-5 lead, and extended it to 14-8, the Stallions began to claw back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yamileth Castaneda put down a side out kill, and Alejo served up four straight points with an ace and three Panthers\u2019 errors to cut the lead to one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another Castaneda side out kill led to a point from Bella Doan to tie the set. A Castaneda side out kill and ace tied the set at 17. A Dallas Chavira side out kill and a Peralta ace tied the set at 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Panthers got the side out, but gave it back with a hit out of bounds. Hernandez served up three points with two Alejo kills for a 23-20 Stallions\u2019 lead. The Panthers got the side out and served up an ace to cut the lead to one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vasquez sent back a Panthers\u2019 attack for set point, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
24-22. The Panthers got the side out, but Alejo put down a kill for a 25-23 Stallions win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the fourth set, the Stallions fell behind, 11-6, after four straight errors. Later, the Panthers put down a side out kill, and served up four more points for a 19-9 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chavira and Hernandez combined on a block for a side out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A trade in side outs later, Kaolany Lal served up two points, but the Panthers still led 20-13. The Panthers closed the set with three straight points for a 25-14 win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the fourth set, a missed serve led to six straight points, including four Stallion errors, for a 6-1 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aces from Hernandez and Lal cut the lead down to two. Kills from Alejo and Vasquez kept the lead to two. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Doan served up an ace and Hernandez won a joust at the net to tie the set at 11. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Panthers got a tip kill, and scored the next six points for a 17-11 lead. After a trade in side outs, Washington Union scored five more points with three more Stallion errors for a 22-13 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the second week in a row, the Yosemite Badgers faced a Madera team, and for the second week in a row, the Madera team came out on top, this time, the Madera South Stallions recorded a 43-22 victory in Oakhurst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diego Navarro operated the Stallions\u2019 wildcat to perfection. He carried 27 times for 165 yards, averaging more than six yards a carry while also scoring four touchdowns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also threw just enough, five times, to be dangerous. He found a wide-open Jonathan Buendia for a 61-yard gain to open the game in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adam Sandez carried the ball just four times, but gained 72 yards. Efren Cosio-Garcia had 55 yards on 13 carries. In all, the Stallions rushed for 317 yards, averaged 5.9 yards per carry, and scored six rushing touchdowns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Badgers opened the game with a drive inside Yosemite territory, but a Sandez sack on fourth down turned the ball over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navarro gained 21 yards to the Yosemite 24 , but the drive stalled, and the Stallions missed a 39-yard field goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Badgers were forced to punt, but a high snap forced a panicked kick that went for just eight yards to give the Stallions the ball at the Yosemite 32. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navarro gained eight on fourth-and-two to get the ball to the 16. Three Navarro runs later gave the Stallions a 7-0 lead after a Flores extra point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a trade in possessions, the Stallions took over after a Yosemite incomplete pass on fourth down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navarro found a wide open Buendia behind the Yosemite defense, and Buendia carried it to the two. Navarro scored on the next play for a 14-0 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lead was short-lived after Yosemite scored on a 61-yard catch and run. The Yosemite receiver eluded two Stallions\u2019 defender when he caught the ball, and ran down the right sideline for a touchdown to cut the Stallions\u2019 lead in half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It took the Stallions just three plays to answer. Navarro found Jesus Sepeda for 11 yards. Then, Sandez found open running room for a 42-yard gain to the 10. Navarro found running room to the left for the touchdown. The point after snap was high, but holder William Hernandez found Sandez in the back corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion, and a 22-7 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yosemite came back with a 40-yard pass play to get into Stallions\u2019 territory and closed the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass for a 22-14 Stallions\u2019 second quarter lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Stallions opened the second half with a sustained drive. Madera South went 60 yards on 10 plays. The final five plays, and 25 yards, were covered by Cosio-Garcia, who scored from a yard out for a 29-14 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yosemite got a 20-yard run to spark its next drive. The Badgers faced a third-and-18, and used the scramble drill to compete a first down pass. However, A.J. Alvarez forced a fumble and Rodrigo Rivera was there for the recovery at the Yosemite 44. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four runs by Navarro gained 31 yards to the 13. After a penalty, Navarro went behind an Eric Blanton block for nine yards. Navarro gained seven on third-and-seven. On fourth-and-inches, Navarro found an opening to the right corner of the end zone for a 37-14 lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a 15-yard Yosemite punt, the Stallions took advantage of the short field. Helped by a 15-yard penalty, Navarro went around the left side for a 17-yard touchdown run. Flores\u2019 kick gave the Stallions a 43-14 fourth quarter lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
