It represents continued commitment to public safety, community protection and the ability to provide timely and effective emergency services, not only to this area, but to Rolling Hills and the surrounding areas.”

“In nearly a year’s time, this nearly 9,000 square foot area will be transformed into a state-of-the-art firehouse that will serve thousands of residents in the area,” said Madera County Director of Communications, Alexan Balekian. “It’s been a long time coming. If you build it, they will come. This illustrates the Board of Supervisors is committed to public safety, preserving your way of life, protecting your most precious belongings and your loved ones and the house and life you built in Madera County. It’s something our County leaders don’t take for granted. That’s what makes this monumental day another historical step that says Madera County has your back.”

The new fire station represents a commitment to, not only fire safety, but public safety in Madera County.

“This is more about a broader conversation that we have,” said Madera County Supervisor Jordan Wamhoff, who represents the Riverstone community. “What we do well is public safety. We don’t speak it with our words. We speak it with our actions. More than 70 percent of our general fund dollars go towards public safety. That is more than a number of counties or municipalities spend. We put public safety as our priority. This station is a testament to that priority.”

The new fire station will feature three engine apparatus bays, six firefighter bunk rooms, a kitchen, a day room, exercise facilities and public spaces.

“Being a police officer, I do have to point out that half of the facility is where the firefighters will sleep,” Wamhoff said. “They sleep on the job. I am so proud of our firefighters we have in Madera County.”

The station will also feature separate clean and dirty areas to help reduce firefighter exposure to carcinogens and contaminants. The station will also include decontamination and clean up areas, showers, dedicated laundry facilities, turnout gear cleaning and respirator storage.

For Madera County Supervisor Chairman Bobby Macauley, Station No. 6 was the fourth ground breaking he has attended, and more are being planned.

“We’re already having conversations of new fire stations at Valley Children’s Hospital, as well as a remodel in Yosemite Lakes Park,” he said. “If I can name one thing Madera County has gotten right over the last 10 years, it’s fire protection. It’s not by accident. That comes with thoughtful planning. We’re not here because of the work that was done in the past year, but because of the groundwork set before us. I want to acknowledge those that came before us like Max Rodriguez, Tom Wheeler and Brett Frazier that helped make sure we had the proper planning to be here today.”

One of the things both Macauley and Wamhoff wanted to emphasize is the Board of Supervisors’ commitment to public safety.

“I’m a little fired up to be here,” Macauley said. “I was talking to a friend, and he asked, ‘What is one thing Madera County has gotten right in the past 10 years?’ Overwhelmingly, from my perspective, that’s fire protection. It’s fire risk reduction, whether it’s the County’s investment in our partners to reduce the risk of fire or it’s the County investment in fire apparatus or that we have the right facilities located in the right places.”

“With this fire station, we are serving a broader population,” Wamhoff said. “When a fire happens, it’s not just one fire station. This station is a state-of-the-art facility that is strategically located to meet those response time requirements to keep all of us safer.”

The funding for the facility came from the fees the County charged the residents in the Riverstone area.

“I am proud to have developed this community in a place that is so great to work with,” said Tim Jones of Valley Development Company, the main developer of Riverstone. “This will be a state-of-the-art facility. Even in the design phases, I’m thinking it’s going to cost a lot of money. Ultimately, it’s paid by the development themselves. I am so proud of the people serving Madera County’s government services. I know the people in Riverstone will call this their own.”

With the new fire station, it helps Cal Fire and Madera County Fire reach more residents in a more timely manner. Police account for 36.2 percent of general fund spending, while fire services account for 11.2 percent.

Sales tax is the city’s largest single source of general fund revenue, with Madera receiving one percent of its 8.25 percent sales tax rate.

The presentation also covered upcoming transit changes. Following a study approved by the City Council on August 5, the City plans to eliminate two of its four fixed routes, and reconfigure the remaining two to increase service frequency from once every hour to once every 30 minutes.

Other proposed changes include introducing micro-transit, extending service hours, using Uber and Lyft after normal service hours, and creating a shuttle connection to Fresno’s transit system. Lima said the city’s target launch date for the new system is July 1, 2028.

Silva then presented an overview of Human Resources, and its role in city operations. Silva explained that the city participates in a risk-sharing arrangement with other municipalities, with Madera paying the first $100,000 of a liability claim before costs move into a shared insurance pool.

The department may also seek reimbursement when an individual damages city property.

In one example, damage to a traffic signal controller resulted in approximately $29,000 in damages. Texas is likely to pick them up just because of the population shifts that are now occurring.”

McClintock also mentioned deportation that would cause the population decrease. Just during the Biden administration, at least 10 million illegals were allowed into this country.

McClintock has campaigned all over the district. Because he has served for the past 18 years, he knows the district well. He knows the people and where to visit on his campaign trail.

He moved to California as a child, and he noted the difference in what California is today compared to what he remembered as a child.

“The California that I remember from my youth and the California today are literally heaven and hell. My family moved to a little suburb north of Los Angeles in 1965. This really was a land of opportunity. My dad had been unemployed for a couple years in New York, came out to California in desperation, and immediately found a good job. My folks bought on a modest income, the home of their dreams. It was a 2,500-square-foot ranch-style home with a half-acre landscaped and a 40-foot swimming pool in the backyard. They paid for that home $35,000. That’s about $378,000 in today’s money.”

When asked to comment on the High-Speed Rail, he said, “I led the opposition of the high-speed rail in the state legislature many years ago. Jim Costa, by the way, was the principal advocate for that. He never has gotten the credit he deserves for the high-speed rail in California, because he was the major sponsor of that legislation.

“I did the research recently. Since 1980, we’ve had a 75 percent increase in registered motor vehicles in California. We’ve seen a nine percent increase in freeway lanes. What we’ve already spent for the high-speed rail, forget what we’re going to spend, it continues. Just what we’ve already spent would have been enough to add 2,000 miles of new freeway lanes on rural corridors like 99 and 5 or about 320 miles of freeway lanes on the densest urban sections of the country like the 405 in Los Angeles.

“That’s what we’ve already sacrificed to this lunacy, and they’re now telling us that the total build-out is going to cost about 10 times more than we’ve already spent,” he said. “So just add a zero to those figures, and that’s what we will have sacrificed. If they get their way, all to get a train that will take you from Los Angeles to San Francisco in two hours longer than it takes to fly there.”

When asked about Prop 39, he said. “It’s simple common sense; 167 countries around the world require a photo ID to vote. We require photo ID to board a plane, to cash a check, to get free admission to the Obama Presidential Library. But for some reason, the Democrats are opposed to requiring a photo ID to cast a vote that determines the future of our country. I find that ludicrous. Every country in Africa requires photo ID to vote. Mexico requires photo ID to vote. Many other states have photo ID.”

His focus in office is his three committee assignments: natural resources, basic fire and water, and budget.

“I’ve been very proud over the years to be rated the best vote in Congress, or at least one of the best votes, by groups such as the Citizens Against Government Waste, and National Taxpayers Union. That’s because of my work on the Budget Committee. I also sit on Judiciary and chair of the Immigration Subcommittee.

“So that’s my focus. Those are the issues that I most concentrate on. But the ultimate overriding issue, and I put this to a recent group. I asked, ‘Does anyone in his right mind actually believe that opening our borders to tens of millions of unvetted illegals is somehow going to make your life, your family’s life, safer and more secure? Does anybody in his right mind actually believe that higher taxes and more regulations are going to make your life more affordable or more comfortable? And does anybody in his right mind actually believe that socialism is going to work any better here?”

Tom McClintock (R) is currently serving at the U.S. Representative for California’s 5th Congressional District, which was previously the 4th Congressional District before the redistricting last year. During her first weekend in college, she was on a date when she struck up a conversation with another guy that has lasted 54 years. They moved to Madera in 1978 from Roswell, New Mexico, leaving behind aliens who had crash-landed in 1947. Allegedly.

The Madera County Probation Department hired Cathy to investigate the care provided to court-appointed conservatees through the Madera County Public Guardian. She earned her master’s degree in marriage and family counseling at Fresno State to become Madera County’s first Family Court Services mediator in child custody court disputes. She loves people.

Cathy raised two Madera-born sons, Ian and Dylan. She coached soccer, served as a Cub Scouts volunteer, and supported their participation in academic decathlons. She is still Mom four decades later. Cathy now grandmothers two young boys, including valiantly striving to balance the questionable example set by their Madera grandfather.

Cathy’s lineage includes Choctaw and Cheyenne Indians. Her relatives fought for America during the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War, both World Wars, Korea, and in Vietnam.

She loved working with kids as a Madera Unified School District high school counselor. Some of them, now parents themselves, stop her in town to catch-up.

Cathy has served as the president of four local nonprofit, volunteer organizations. She volunteers through the 145-year-old American Association of University Women (AAUW). The local chapter raises money to help fund college scholarships for Madera County girls. Cathy has led the local chapter of California Retired Teachers, CalRTA, advocating for and protecting educators’ pensions and benefits and the local PEO Sisterhood chapter (Philanthropic Educational Organization), serving its 100-plus year mission to help women achieve their educational goals. And she was president of the Madera County Child Abuse Prevention Council.

Cathy’s reputation is one of kindness. She puts others before herself. She does not seek attention. Serving has been more important than merely joining. But she repeatedly is placed in positions of leadership in our community because she works hard, enables decisions by consensus, and gets things done.

She is an avid supporter of local arts through the Madera County Arts Council, high school plays, and the Madera Theatre Project. She enjoys the San Joaquin Valley Town Hall lecture series. Cathy especially loves watching musicals with family through the Fresno Broadway series. Torres has won four of the five Rodeo Bowl meetings.

Torres’ rushing game almost out gained the Madera South offense. Lead running back Caden Warden carried 23 times for 198 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown. His back-up, Angel De La Sancha, broke off a 49-yard run, and scored a touchdown. The Toros gained 260 yards on the ground against Madera South’s 265 total yards.

The Stallions had six different ball carriers tote the ball 48 times for 180 yards with a touchdown. Quarterback John Ledesma threw for 85 yards and a score.

Diego Reyna Navarro carried 18 times for 62 yards, and a score while Ledesma called his own number 16 times for 83 yards.

The Stallions opened the game with a drive into Torres territory, but had to punt.

Three plays later, Ledesma picked off a Torres pass to set the Stallions up at the Torres 20.

Reyna Navarro and Ledesma carried for 10 yards. An offisdes call gave Madera South a first down. Three plays later, Reyna Navarro scored from two yards out, and Michael Cuevas hit the extra point for a 7-0 lead with three minutes left in the first.

The Toros answered right back. Joseph Pasillas carried for eight, and Warden gained 11 on third-and-two.

From the Madera South 43, Nathaniel Pichardo found an open Jordan Garcia up the middle. Garcia blew past his defender on a seam route from the slot for a 43-yard touchdown catch. The point after was missed, and Madera South led, 7-6, with 1:28 left in the first quarter.

After Madera South turned the ball over on downs, Torres took the ball inside the Stallions’ 30. Elijah Chavez read the Torres middle screen, and picked off Pichardo to stop the drive.

Ledesma ran for six for an initial first down, but the Stallions punted at midfield.

The Toros got a 15-yard run from Warden and Pichardo hit Darryn Garcia for 14 yards to get into Stallions’ territory. Warden gained eight, and then found running room to the left. He went behind the blocks of Alfredo Diaz, Joseph Razo and Pasillas for a 34-yard gain.

However, Torres mishandled the hand-off two plays later, and Madera South’s Charles Moore came up with the recovery.

The Stallions started a drive with 3:51 left in the half. Ledesma and Reyna Navarro gained 18 yards. Ledesma hit Cuevas for eight yards, and a first down. Ledesma carried for 10 to the Torres 39.

Two Ledesma runs moved the ball to the Torres 28. Two incomplete passes ended the half.

Torres opened the second half with the ball at its 38. Warden got the ball up the middle, and went behind a Ramon Espinoza block to find running room. Warden outran the defense down the right sideline for a 62-yard run. Hector Diaz’s kick was good for a 13-7 lead, just 17 seconds into the half.

The Stallions came right back. After George Roberts carried for four on third-and-three, the Stallions moved the ball into Torres territory.

Ledesma threw a quick tight end pop pass to A.J. Alvarez, who got behind the Torres defense. Alvarez carried the ball the final 33 yards into the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown after Cuevas hit the extra point for a 14-13 Madera South lead.

Warden got the call four straight times for 12 yards to open the next Torres drive. De La Sancha came in relief of Warden, and found running room behind Razo and Richard Galindo for a 49-yard gain around the left side. De La Sancha was given a chance to finish what he started, and scored from two-yards out to give the Toros the lead.

Pasillas scored on an end around for the two-point conversion, and a 21-14 Torres lead with 5:06 left in the third quarter.

The Stallions went on a seven minute drive that didn’t lead to any points. Roberts, Ledesma and Reyna Navarro moved the ball to the Torres 26. However, two Madera South penalties forced the Stallions to a third-and-26. A Ledesma pass to Cuevas gained eight, but the fourth down pass fell incomplete, and the 14-play drive didn’t result in points.

The Toros faced a third-and-two, but a bad snap forced De La Sancha to cover the ball for a loss of four. Then, a bad snap to the punter forced a punt for a loss of four at the Torres 44.

Reyna Navarro gained six and Ledesma found Jonathan Buendia for 12 yards to the 32. Reyna Navarro, behind block from Cuevas and Alvarez, gained 11 to the 21.

After a tackle for loss, Ledesma scrambled twice for eight yards. On fourth-and-six, Alfredo Diaz provided the Torres pressure, and Ledesma threw incomplete to turn the ball over with 3:23 left in the game.

The Toros turned to their closer, Warden. He carried five straight times for 26 yards, and two first downs before Pichardo took two knees with 1:12 left in the game to preserve the Torres win.

The Matilda Torres Toros football team answered a Madera South score in the third quarter, and held off two long Stallions’ drives over the next 17 minutes to secure a 21-14 Rodeo Bowl victory.
