The Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office hosted its twice-annual Swearing-in, Promotions and Awards ceremony last week.<\/p>\n\n

On top of the promotions and the swearing in, the MCSO also honored four graduated students with the Sheriff\u2019s Foundation Scholarship. Each senior was awarded $1,000.<\/p>\n\n

Receiving the scholarships were Patricia Ochoa (Madera Community College), Jeffery Rowland (Madera Community College), Sebastian Graham (Liberty High School) and Fabian Maciel (Madera Community College).<\/p>\n\n

\u201cOne of my favorite parts of this ceremony is looking out and seeing all of the family members, friends, and loved ones who are here today,\u201d said MCSO Sheriff Tyson Pogue. \u201cThe smiles, the pride, and the excitement on your faces remind us that these achievements aren\u2019t earned by one person alone. Behind every badge, every promotion, and every milestone is a support system that has been there through the late nights, missed holidays, difficult calls, and long hours.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cTo the families joining us today, thank you. Your encouragement, patience, and understanding make it possible for your loved ones to answer the call every day. While they wear the badge, you serve alongside them in ways that often go unseen, and we are grateful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Pogue, and his staff, recognized seven officers who received promotions. They also recognized 16 individuals who were recently hired to the MCSO.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIn law enforcement, promotions are never simply about rank,\u201d Pogue said. \u201cThey represent years of hard work, dedication, and professional growth. They are earned through countless hours of training, experience gained in the field, and the trust built with peers, supervisors, and the community we serve.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cEach new stripe or gold bar carries more than a title. It carries greater responsibility. It means being the person others turn to during difficult moments, making decisions when the answers are not always clear, mentoring the next generation of employees, and leading by example every single day. Leadership is not measured by rank alone. It is measured by character, consistency, and the willingness to put others before yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Those promoted were Lieutenant Richard Gutierrez, Sergeant Michael Chambers, Corporal Sara Vind, Correctional Sergeant Lynette Lesage, Correctional Corporal Krystle Ruiz, and Correctional Deputies Kevin Behe and Mathew Sifers.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cNew hires are the future of the MCSO,\u201d Pogue said. \u201cThey are the supervisors, mentors, and role models who will guide the next generation of employees beginning their careers today. The badge they receive today is more than a piece of metal. It represents integrity, service, accountability, and a promise to uphold the values of the Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office. It is a promise they will carry with them every day they wear it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

For Lenora \u201cNora\u201d Salazar, success was never measured by awards or accomplishments. It was measured by the lives she touched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salazar was more than a businesswoman, mother, and community leader. She was a woman who believed success came from hard work, service, and uplifting others. From helping families purchase their first home to volunteering for hours in the community, Salazar believed service was the responsibility that came with living in a community she loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe was an independent spirit and was like no other woman of her era,\u201d said her daughter, Rosanne Bonilla. \u201cHer willingness to help others continues to grow. Those who knew Nora still talk about her to this day and share their appreciation for her kindness, wisdom and unfailing commitment to do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Nora\u2019s time in Madera, she absolutely fell in love with the community and made it her mission to help support wherever she could. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNora was always ambitious, and the move to Madera gave her an opportunity like no other community had in the past.\u201d Bonilla shared. \u201cShe modeled what she wanted others to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salazar first worked alongside Dr. Gustaveson in his dental practice, where she became known for helping young women learn the dental assisting profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her path later took her into the travel industry before she discovered a passion for real estate. She quickly became one of the area\u2019s top-performing Realtors, earning multiple Realtor of the Year honors before opening Nora and Associates at the age of 60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her ability to connect with Spanish-speaking families helped many achieve homeownership at a time when language barriers made the process much more difficult. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople still remember Nora and share fond memories of how she supported families in attaining their homes,\u201d Bonilla said. \u201cIt was just in her DNA to help people.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for Salazar, serving the community extended beyond her career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than 25 years, she volunteered with Madera\u2019s Christmas Basket Program, encouraging her daughters to join her in packing and delivering food to families during the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was active in the PTA at John Adams Elementary School, helped lead Camp Fire youth groups, served through St. Joachim Church\u2019s Young Ladies Institute, and later helped establish the local chapter of Latina Unidas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe always said, \u2018Service to others was the price you had to pay for your rent here on earth,\u2019\u201d Bonilla recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salazar also believed girls deserved the same opportunities as boys. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1969, she joined other local parents in helping establish one of Madera\u2019s first girls\u2019 softball leagues, giving young athletes opportunities that had previously been unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is hard to imagine that girls were so limited in their options when it came to sports in the late 60s,\u201d Bonilla said. \u201cMany girls from that era remember playing softball, and many went on to become incredible coaches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporting Madera was part of Salazar\u2019s everyday life. She intentionally shopped at local businesses because she believed every dollar spent downtown strengthened the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe had a vision of what a community is supposed to do,\u201d Bonilla said. \u201cThat is what she did. She led.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Salazar\u2019s legacy lives on through the people she mentored, the organizations she helped build and the families whose lives she impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Madera Fair prepares for its 2026 \u201cAll-American Party!\u201d celebration, organizers are inviting residents throughout the Central Valley to share stories of individuals whose lives reflect the values of service, perseverance and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selected submissions will become part of the fair\u2019s All-American Story Project, a special exhibit highlighting local stories during the 2026 Madera Fair, which runs September 10-13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madera District Fair announced the launch of the All American Story Project, a series highlighting notable community members and honoring the meaningful stories that make the Central Valley unique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the 2026 Madera Fair quickly approaches, the Fair invites local residents to nominate themselves or someone they know with an impactful story to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the launch of this campaign, the Fair will focus on three storytelling initiatives \u2014 the All American Hero, All American Dream and All American Agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The All American Hero initiative will honor Madera County U.S. veterans and active-duty military personnel who have demonstrated extraordinary service and commitment to both their country and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The All American Dream initiative will share the personal stories of Madera County residents who came to America in pursuit of opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, the All American Agriculture will highlight the vital role of generational farming and the families who work tirelessly to help feed America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nominations are now open to all Madera County residents. Candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by a community member. To be considered, each submission must include a written story of no more than 500 words describing the individual\u2019s impact, along with three high-resolution photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By participating, residents have the opportunity to be recognized during this year\u2019s Fair festivities. Honorees will be featured in a static display throughout the 2026 Madera Fair and will receive nontransferable passes for two people to attend the Fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deadline to submit nominations is July 30, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The volunteer group for the voter\u2019s initiative measure to expand and improve the Madera County Animal Services facility and add an affordable, non profit veterinary clinic for residents and their animals delivered approximately 4,700 signatures July 16, to the Madera County Elections Deptartment for signature verification, according to measure founder DJ Becker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Becker said that the 4,700 turned in was well more than the required minimum of 3,750 for registration verification, and if the minimum requirement for valid signatures is met, the measure will then proceed to the ballot in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe should know the results from the elections department soon,\u201d Becker said. \u201cMy sincerest thank you to everyone who signed our petitions to expand and build a new animal shelter with an affordable vet clinic, and especially to our many animal volunteers who know and live with this need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s taken us over two years to get to this point. These volunteers stepped up, showed up and made this all possible. We are making history here with our efforts to improve our community, and expand services for our residents and our animals. I don\u2019t believe there have been any other voter initiatives for animal services with an affordable vet clinic in California quite like it. California Highway Patrol Madera officers responded to a crash involving two vehicles, on SR-152, at Road 14 1\/2. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 32-year-old man from Fresno was driving a white 2019 Freightliner Cascadia, tractor trailer combination, eastbound on SR-152, approaching Road 14 1\/2 at about 2 a.m. Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was traveling in the No. 2 lane, at approximately 10-15 mph, with his emergency hazard lights activated, due to experiencing engine difficulties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 50-year-old woman from Fresno was driving a black Honda Clarity, traveling eastbound on SR-152, in the No. 2 lane, approaching the rear of the Freightliner. A 17-year-old female was seated in the right front passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For reasons still under investigation, the 50-year-old driver collided into the rear of the Freightliner\u2019s trailer. Due to the severity of the impact, the Honda became wedged under the rear of the trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the impact, the truck driver drove to the right shoulder, unaware the Honda was trapped beneath the rear of the trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the immediate response from emergency personnel, both the driver and passenger in the Honda were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured. All parties were wearing their seat belts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This crash remains under investigation. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol and\/or drugs were a factor (pending toxicology report).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The Madera American Little League 8-12-year-old All-Star team continued its run through the postseason tournaments with a victory in the Section 7 Tournament to head to the NorCal State Tournament in Chico this weekend.<\/p>\n\n

The Madera American All-Stars opened the Section 7 tournament with a solid 6-2 victory over Corcoran on Thursday to send them into the semifinals on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n

However, Madera American stumbled Saturday against Corcoran, and didn\u2019t look like the team that had been dominating the past two tournaments. They were no-hit by Corcoran. On top of that, they committed three errors that led to extra runs, and walked five batters in a 12-1 loss.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThat was brutal,\u201d Madera American manager Steve Gallegos said. \u201cThey jumped on us, and once they jumped on us, they didn\u2019t let go. It put us in a bad spot that we weren\u2019t used to. We kind of went into shock, and it went downhill from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

However, in the finale of the, essentially, best of three battle, Madera American got a solid pitching performance from David Olivas to put away Corcoran, 13-3, to win the Section 7 title.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cDavid threw three innings last time, and they didn\u2019t touch him,\u201d Gallegos said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to ride that horse. He had their number.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI agitated our kids to get them ready for this game. I just tried to motivate that team. After losing Saturday, that made us really want it. We went to the field and just worked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

In Madera American\u2019s five tournament wins, they have outscored their opponents, 52-7.<\/p>\n\n

Next for Madera American is the NorCal State Tournament on Saturday in Chico. They are one tournament win away from the West Regionals.<\/p>\n\n

Madera American 13, Corcoran 3<\/h3>\n\n

Unlike the day before, Madera American scored first, and often, to secure the Section 7 title.<\/p>\n\n

Madera American put the game away with a six-run fourth inning for the 13-3 win.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cOnce we get up, we stomp on you,\u201d Gallegos said. \u201cWe\u2019ll eat your team alive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Olivas was the key, limiting Corcoran to just two hits and an unearned run over 4 2\/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three.<\/p>\n\n

He got support from his offense. Eli Vela and Jayden Morales hit home runs, and Madera American banged out 13 hits. Five different players had a multi-hit game.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAfter Saturday\u2019s loss, we went and grinded,\u201d Gallegos said. \u201cWe came out early and just hit, hit, hit, and it carried over tonight; I didn\u2019t care who they put on that hill, we were going to hit him today. They could put anyone in, put the coach in, we\u2019ll hit him too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Madera American got on the scoreboard with a two-out, nobody on rally in the top of the first inning.<\/p>\n\n

Olivas started the rally with a single up the middle. Two pitches later, Vela deposited a 1-0 pitch over the left-centerfield fence for a two-run home run.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran battled back in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a couple of Madera American mistakes.<\/p>\n\n

An error put the lead-off runner on. A single and another error loaded the bases with nobody out.<\/p>\n\n

Gallegos made a visit to the mound to settle down his team.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThat was the biggest turning point of the game,\u201d he said. \u201cWe called time out to settle David down. I told him we needed a strikeout or a cheap ground ball to limit the damage. David executed to perfection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Olivas struck out the next batter and a sacrifice fly drove in Corcoran\u2019s first run. Then, Olivas got a fly out to center to retire the side and limit the damage.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI think that was the biggest turning point in the game,\u201d Gallegos said. \u201cDavid was pumped up getting out of that mess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Madera American used that momentum into the top of the second inning. With one out, Morales drew a walk. Michael Granado singled to put two on. Antonio Guerrero loaded the bases with a single to right.<\/p>\n\n

After a strikeout, Omar Prudente watched the first pitch go by him to the backstop. Morales raced in to score on the wild pitch. The throw from the catcher was missed by the pitcher, and Granado scored from second base for a 4-1 lead.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran put a threat on the bases in the second. Two strikeouts, two hit batters and a single loaded the bases. Olivas got out of the inning with his fourth strikeout of the night.<\/p>\n\n

After a scoreless third, Madera American put the game out of reach in the fourth. Olivas was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, Omar Molina and Rick Avila singled.<\/p>\n\n

On a 0-2 pitch, Morales got a pitch up in the zone over the plate, and deposited the ball over the advertising signs in left-center field for a three-run home run to break open the game.<\/p>\n\n

Madera American wasn\u2019t done. Granado started another rally with a single to center. After Granado advanced to second on a wild pitch, Guerrero hit a ground-rule double over the left-center field fence to drive in Granado.<\/p>\n\n

Guerrero advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jeremiah Marmolejo drew a walk. Madera American executed a first-and-third steal that scored Guerrero with Marmolejo getting tagged out to give Madera American a 10-1 lead.<\/p>\n\n

After the second, Olivas allowed three baserunners, all walks, into the fifth inning. He recorded a strikeout on his 87th pitch of the game to reach his pitch limit.<\/p>\n\n

Andrew Andrade struck out the next batter to end the fifth.<\/p>\n\n

Madera American tacked on three more runs in the sixth. With one out, Olivas singled to left. Vela singled to left and Molina singled to center to drive in Olivas.<\/p>\n\n

The ball went under the center fielder\u2019s glove, and Vela scored from first, and Olivas raced into third. Avila grounded out to drive in Molina for a 13-1 lead.<\/p>\n\n

Andrade allowed a walk and three straight singles to open the sixth. Corcoran scored two runs to gain some momentum.<\/p>\n\n

However, Madera American got the momentum back when second baseman Vela snagged a line drive heading to first. He kept running to double up the runner at first.<\/p>\n\n

Andrade settled down and ended the game with a strikeout to send Madera American to Chico.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran 12, Madera American 1<\/h3>\n\n

Madera American fell into the same holes teams they beat fell into in a chance to win the Section 7 championship on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran stymied the Madera American bats. The left-handed pitcher allowed an unearned run with seven strikeouts and three walks.<\/p>\n\n

Vela struggled on the mound. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran banged out 10 hits in the win, and took advantage of three errors.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran scored two runs in the second inning on two hits and an error. They added another run on a hit batter, single and a pair of wild pitches.<\/p>\n\n

Madera American had a chance to get in the game, but left two on in the first and a runner in scoring position in the second.<\/p>\n\n

Michael Granado drew a one out walk in the third. He went to second on a wild pitch, and to third on an error. He scored on another error on a misplay on the throw to second to cut the lead to 3-1.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran put the game out of reach with nine runs in the fourth. Madera American used three pitchers in the inning. Corcoran had six hits, including a three-run triple that put the end to the game.<\/p>\n\n

Madera American 6, Corcoran 2<\/h3>\n\n

Madera American scored all six of its runs in the first inning and held off Corcoran the rest of the way for a 6-2 victory Thursday.<\/p>\n\n

Vela picked up the win with two hits and a run in two innings of work. He struck out five and walked a batter. Olivas tossed three innings in relief, and struck out nine batters. Amari Glynn closed out the game with two hits and a strike out.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran out hit Madera American, 5-4, but the damage was done in the first.<\/p>\n\n

After the first inning, Madera American didn\u2019t have a hit. They drew six walks, but didn\u2019t threaten.<\/p>\n\n

Glynn led off the game with a double to left field. After a strikeout, Avila singled to right to put runners at second and third after a throw to the plate.<\/p>\n\n

Andrade singled to right to drive in Glynn. Olivas reached on an error to drive in Avila. Vela reached on another error to drive in Andrade.<\/p>\n\n

After Prudente was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Molina singled to left to drive in Olivas and Vela. Molina was tagged out trying to advance to second.<\/p>\n\n

Guerrero was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Madera American executed a first-and-third steal to perfection with Prudente scoring and Guerrero taking second for a 6-0 lead.<\/p>\n\n

Madera American had a chance to add to the lead in the fifth with walks to Prudente, Molina and Granado to load the bases, but a strike out ended the inning.<\/p>\n\n

Corcoran scored a run in the second on a double and a single, but Vela struck out the side to limit the damage.<\/p>\n\n

In the sixth, Corcoran got a lead-off walk and a pair of singles to cut the lead to four. However, Corcoran hit a grounder to second. Throughout the past year, three former Madera cross country and track athletes have excelled in their time at UC Merced, earning top marks on the track and in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n

Irene Martinez, Jr.<\/h3>\n\n

The former Matilda Torres standout was on the spring Dean\u2019s List at UC Merced. She was the Bobcats\u2019 top runner in all four cross country meets she ran in last year.<\/p>\n\n

She also became the first underclassman to lead the Bobcats in a cross country conference championship race since 2021.<\/p>\n\n

This year, she was nominated for UC Merced\u2019s Georgette \u201cMa\u201d Kelley Female Athlete of the year.<\/p>\n\n

She holds the third best six-kilometer time in track (22:52.8), and is also third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:45.40. She is eighth in program history in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:09.54.<\/p>\n\n

Buffalo Soito, Soph.<\/h3>\n\n

The former Toro earned top five marks in track in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:59.04, and the 5,000 meters, with a time of 15:28.83.<\/p>\n\n

He has yet to make his cross country debut for UC Merced.<\/p>\n\n

Vicente Velarde<\/h3>\n\n

Leading both the cross country and track teams are former Madera Coyote standout Vicente Velarde.<\/p>\n\n

The Bobcats recently made the merger from NAIA into NCAA Division II, and Velarde\u2019s track and cross country teams led the charge.<\/p>\n\n

One of his runners won the conference steeplechase title and one of his sprinter earned conference Athlete of the Week honors.<\/p>\n\n

How many young Americans today know who President Dwight D. Eisenhower was? How many know why he signed the Communist Control Act in 1954? More importantly, how many understand what he believed was at stake?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eisenhower lived through World War II and led the Allied victory in Europe before becoming president during the height of the Cold War. He witnessed, firsthand, what happened when totalitarian governments gained power. He understood that freedom was not self-sustaining. It had to be defended by citizens who valued liberty, constitutional government, and the rule of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1954, Eisenhower signed the Communist Control Act because he and many Americans believed the Communist Party represented more than ordinary political disagreement. They viewed it as tied to a foreign ideology that had produced authoritarian governments abroad and conflicted with the principles of the United States Constitution. Whether every provision of that law remained enforceable in later years is not the central lesson. The lesson is that Eisenhower believed Americans should remain vigilant in protecting their constitutional republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That raises an important question for our own time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens when one political party dominates government for years with little meaningful competition? Does that strengthen accountability \u2014 or weaken it? Does it encourage fresh ideas \u2014 or make government less responsive to the people it serves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California has effectively operated under one-party dominance for many years. Regardless of political affiliation, every voter should ask some honest questions. Is our state becoming more affordable? Are our schools producing better results? Are our communities safer? Can young families still achieve the dream of owning a home? Are taxpayers receiving the responsible government they deserve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are not Republican questions or Democratic questions. They are American questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eisenhower believed that a healthy republic depends upon informed citizens, competitive elections, and public officials who faithfully honor their oath to support and defend the Constitution. Our nation\u2019s founders never intended for citizens to stop asking difficult questions or to accept government without accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the greatest danger today is not that Americans disagree with one another. Healthy debate has always strengthened our nation. The greater danger is that too many Americans, especially younger generations, have never been taught why constitutional government matters or why previous generations sacrificed so much to preserve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every generation inherits freedom, but no generation is guaranteed to keep it. Liberty survives only when citizens understand its value and are willing to defend it through informed voting, civic responsibility, and respect for the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future of America will not be determined by one political party alone. It will be determined by whether we remain a nation where the Constitution limits government, where elected officials are held accountable by the people, and where citizens continue to ask the difficult questions that keep a republic strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the best way to honor Dwight D. Eisenhower is not simply to remember his name, but to remember the lesson he tried to teach: freedom is preserved only when an informed and engaged people are willing to defend it.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

I wasn\u2019t quite halfway through #5, Skeleton Canyon (1997, 432 pages in paperback format), of J.A. Jance\u2019s Cochise County series when it hit me. I love Sheriff Joanna Brady. If you\u2019ve read the foundation novels (Desert Heat, 1993 and Tombstone Courage, 1995), you know that Joanna\u2019s father was a deputy sheriff who was helping a motorist change a flat tire when he was struck by a passing car and died. Then, her husband, who was running for the elected position of sheriff was murdered. And if you haven\u2019t read either, I haven\u2019t given away anything that you wouldn\u2019t find in the blurb on the back covers. Finally, because all 24 of the books (so far) refer to Joanna as Sheriff Brady, it should not be a mystery about what happens next. Here\u2019s a thumbnail sketch of the three books that I\u2019ve read recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#5 Skeleton Canyon (1997, 422 pages in paperback format)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a Romeo\/Juliet story about Brianna O\u2019Brien, daughter of a wealthy, Anglo racist, and Ignacio \u201cNacio\u201d Ybarra, a football player at Brianna\u2019s high school. When Brianna goes missing, David O\u2019Brien directs his outrage at Cochise County Sheriff Joanna Brady. Like David O\u2019Brien, readers will understand immediately that Brianna is dead. But as far as I\u2019m concerned, the heart of the book revolves around the relationships that form between the newly-elected sheriff and the characters that populate the future episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#6 Rattlesnake Crossing (1998, 422 pages in paperback format)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clyde Phillips, a Bisbee gun dealer, dies violently. Moreover, his entire stock of high-powered assault rifles and a ton of ammunition have disappeared. Local suspicion falls on Alton Hosfield, a grouchy old rancher who has an all-consuming hatred of the government. But Sheriff Joanna Brady takes a different view. She\u2019s interested in the activities of an environmental group that seems to be part New Age hippie while practicing cut-throat capitalism. Two characters emerge who will play important roles in future episodes: Marliss Shackleford, a gossip columnist for the Bisbee Bee, and \u201cButch\u201d Dixon, the bartender whom Joanna met when she attended the Police Academy in Peoria in #3, Shoot Don\u2019t Shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#7 Outlaw Mountain (1999, 450 pages in paperback format)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guess who\u2019s sold his bar in Peoria, moved to Bisbee, bought a house, and has decided to write a novel. Butch Dixon has become unpredictable, and Joanna, who is somewhat smitten with him, has to balance her private life (which always centers on her eleven-year-old daughter Jenny) with her public life, which is always the target of attack by Marliss Shackleford, of the Bisbee Bee. And, of course, there\u2019s the mystery concerning the people who have been murdered by bullets from a powerful long-range rifle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each novel builds on the previous ones and it\u2019s interesting to watch Joanna adjust to being a single mother and the first female sheriff in Arizona. The books are like a television continuing \u201csoap-opera,\u201d (only much better) so I\u2019ll cover three at a time in all future columns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
