A back they can give the ball to and know he will give them what they need.

First, it was Joseph Bass leading the Toros to a Central Section title. His understudy, Amani Sua, followed. Then, it was Angelo Adame, who set a school record with 324 yards rushing in his final game. This year, the mantle is passed to Caden Warden.

All Warden did was rush for a school second-best 286 yards on 20 carries to go with four touchdowns in Friday’s 35-14 victory over the Sanger West Hornets at Toro Stadium.

The junior has 11 touchdowns through five games, and more than 650 yards with five games left to go.

He scored four touchdowns that averaged 39 yards in length. Of his 286 yards, 54 percent (155) went for touchdowns.

The Toros out gained Sanger West 382-332 with 318 yards rushing. Nathaniel Pichardo threw a touchdown pass, and 64 yards.

Torres’ defense allowed pass completions, but not many yards after the catch. Sanger West was 18-of-24 passing for just 120 yards, about six yards per catch.

Sanger West opened the game by driving down the field, and getting into Torres territory. However, the Toros forced a fumble, and Darryn Garcia recovered.

Two plays later, Warden went up the middle, and broke to the right down the sideline. He followed the downfield block of Zachariah Granados for a 43-yard gain to the Hornets’ 26.

Three plays later, Pichardo connected with Garcia for a 24-yard touchdown on third down for a 7-0 lead.

After the Hornets got an initial first down, they were forced to punt at midfield. A sack and two plays for losses forced a Torres punt, but the Hornets went three-and-out to open the second quarter.

Warden got the next carry, and went through two tacklers at the line of scrimmage, and bowled over another defender for a 19-yard gain. Warden got the call, again, and went right up the middle for a 45-yard untouched touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

However, Sanger West scored on the next play with a 65-yard touchdown run over the left side.

But, it took the Toros just three plays, all from Warden to answer. After two runs for nine yards, Warden went off right tackle, through a big hole, and scored from 48 yards out, untouched, for a 21-7 lead.

The Torres defense forced a turnover on downs, and the Toros took over.

Two Pichardo completions to Garcia gained 24 yards to the 25-yard line. Two plays later, Warden gook the hand-off through a big hole. He went behind a Lafayette Webster IV block and a Joseph Razo pancake block to go untouched into the end zone for a 28-6 lead.

The teams exchanged possessions to end the first half.

The Toros had an initial first down to open the second half, but had to punt on fourth-and-25. Sanger West returned the punt for a 13-yard net punt.

The Hornets drove 68 yards on eight plays for a nine-yard touchdown to cut the Torres lead to 28-12.

Torres went to Warden for seven straight runs, including a 28-yard run to the Hornets’ 10. However, a penalty moved the ball back after Warden scored. Pichardo found Joseph Pasillas for 11 yards to the four, but threw incomplete on fourth down.

The Hornets opened the fourth quarter with a first down pass, and converted another first down. However, they threw incomplete to turn the ball over.

Two plays later, Warden put the nail in the coffin with a run up the middle. He bounced it to the left for a 36-yard touchdown run for a 35-12 fourth quarter lead.

Sanger West went on a 13-play, 77-yard drive that ended on the Torres three after an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal.

Angel De La Sancha got the Toros out of its own end zone with a 29-yard run, and Pichardo took a knee to end the game with a victory.

Throughout the years of its infancy, the Matilda Torres Toros football program has always had that bell-cow running back. Madera South had five turnovers in the first 16 minutes of the game, and six overall.

There were some bright spots for the Stallions. They forced a fumble on Hoover’s first drive of the second half, and turned that into points. The Stallions scored a touchdown on the final play of the running-clock second half for a 54-14 final at Stallion Stadium.

Hoover managed 298 yards of total offense, but three of their six touchdown drives began inside Madera South’s 31-yard line, and five of the six began inside the Hoover 45.

Meanwhile, Madera South rushed for 161 yards, led by Diego Reyna-Navarro.

The first four Madera South possessions resulted in turnovers and six of their seven first half drives ended in turnovers.

Hoover had its longest sustained drive to open the game. They went 69 yards on nine plays while converting two first downs. On third down from the nine, Hoover scored on a quarterback keeper. The Patriots connected on a pass for the two-point conversion, and an 8-0 lead with 9:23 left in the first quarter.

Reyna-Navarro gained 14 yards on Madera South’s first play of the game. However, the next snap went over his head, and Hoover recovered at the Stallions’ 14.

The Patriots scored on the next play on a run for two touchdowns within 29 seconds of each other.

The Stallions then went on a long, time-consuming drive. It went 16 plays all the way into Hoover territory. Efren Cosio-Garcia gained eight to the 12 for a first down. Two plays later, Hoover picked off a pass, and returned it 55 yards to the Hoover 43.

The Patriots drove the final 43 yards on six plays, converting on fourth-and-13 from the 29 with a long pass to the five. The Hoover receiver shook off two Stallions at the five, and ran into the end zone for a 22-0 lead, after a two-point conversion, 40 seconds into the second quarter.

Madera South’s next drive lasted just three plays with another fumble.

Hoover scored on the next play with a 29-yard touchdown run, less than two minutes after its previous score. The conversion pass fell incomplete for a 28-0 lead.

Four plays into the next Stallion drive, Madera South fumbled, and this time Hoover picked it up, and ran it in for a 51-yard touchdown, and a 35-0 lead with 8:23 left in the half.

Reyna-Navarro went for 14 yards to open the next Madera South drive. John Ledesma carried for 10, and a first down, but the Stallions were forced to punt after a personal foul penalty.

The Patriots completed a 16-yard pass to get inside the Stallions’ 30. Hoover finished the drive with a pass to the right, the receiver cut across the field, and scored inside the left pylon for the touchdown, and a 41-0 lead with five minutes left in the half.

Ledesma gained 12 for an initial first down for the Stallions. Two plays later, Ledesma tried to throw on the run, but was picked off. Hoover returned the interception the other way for an 85-yard interception return, and a 48-0 lead.

Three plays into the next Stallions’ drive, Madera South fumbled, and Hoover recovered. Seven plays later, the Patriots found the end zone on a quarterback scramble from 18 yards out for a 54-0 lead with 17.9 seconds left in the half.

After the Stallions went three-and-out to open the second half, Madera South punter Orlando Flores sent the ball to the Hoover 15.

On the next play, with Reyna-Navarro holding up the ball carrier, Jesus Sepeda took the ball away from the running back, and took the ball to the one-yard line.

Reyna-Navarro scored on the next play for Madera South’s first score.

Hoover then took the ball into the fourth quarter with a 12-play, 44-yard drive that ended in a fourth-and-one stuff by Luis Deleon for no gain.

Reyna-Navarro hit Ledesma for a 36-yard gain with time running down in the fourth quarter.

Cosio-Garcia gained 10 for a first down, and Ulysses Chiquito ran the ball twice for 23 yards to the 10. Chiquito scored on the final play of the game off the right side. Flores hit the extra point before time ran out for the 54-14 final score.

In a highly-anticipated match-up, the Madera South Stallions had trouble holding onto the ball while the Hoover Patriots scored 54 first half points to put a damper on Homecoming night festivities. Race action picked in the second half of the 150-lap race when Kern winner Mason Massey challenged for the lead.

Massey made a three wide maneuver to take the top spot in lapped traffic on lap 78. Massey then collided with Ian Wood, sending Wood spinning into the turn one wall for a caution on lap 81 with Huddleston retaking the lead.

Madera’s Robbie Kennealy and Eric Johnson, Jr. challenged Deegan for fourth on the ensuing restart.’ Kenna Mitchell was relegated back to seventh.

Deegan made moves in traffic, driving around the outside of Mia Lovell to take third. A restart changed the complexion of the race. Deegan tagged the rear of her teammate, Massey, into turn one, sending him spinning and thrusting Deegan into second position.

A caution flew on lap 142 for Josiah Reaume coming to a stop in turn two. Deegan was unable to complete a pass on Huddleston for the lead on the restart, however. Her race for the win looked over until a collision behind them, when Lovell and Johnson collided in turn three.

The incident set up an overtime, green-white-checkered finish. After leading the entire race, Huddleston tried to hold the lead from the top line.

Deegan stayed alongside of him into the final set of corners, and muscled her up way up the hill to accept the flag for her fourth career ARCA Menards Series, West win.

Huddleston finished second while Mitchell stormed back to finish third in the Central Coast Racing Ford. Dalton then used a restart to drive around the outside of Snider to take the lead on lap nine.

Snider and Tim Skoglund had a furious race for second throughout the event. The drivers in positions two through seven raced nearly nose to tail while Dalton accumulated a 5.9 second lead. The advantage was nullified for a caution when Jerry Kobza slowed to a stop in turn two.

Dalton went back to work in accumulating a sizable lead, driving to a 6.9 second cushion at the checkered flag. Snider fended off Skoglund for second while Frankie Volz Jr. finished fourth. Davey Hamilton rounded out the top-five.

Austin Carter won the 30-lap season finale for the Quick Change Liquid Energy NCMA Sprint Cars while Tony Hunt used a second place drive to win the 2026 championship.

Hunt drove around the outside of championship rival Shauna Hogg on lap 13 to clinch the title.

Carter used an outside pass of his own to take the race lead from Eric Humphries on lap 15. Hunt clawed towards Humphries and overhauled him on the final lap. Carter claimed victory over Hunt, Humphries, Davey Hamilton, and Hogg.

Cole Brown won the INEX Legends 30-lap feature. He strongly opposes foreign military intervention and frequently warns about federal debt. Those concerns led him to criticize Trump-backed Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers while describing Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign as “literally Trumpian.” Carlson also said he would not vote for Rogers “at gunpoint.”

Carlson’s objections to war and government surveillance deserve consideration. But voters should examine the complete record — border enforcement, spending, energy, manufacturing, healthcare and national security — rather than allowing two subjects to determine every conclusion.

The debt problem is real. The Government Accountability Office reported that publicly held federal debt reached $31.3 trillion in April 2026. Federal interest spending exceeded national-defense spending during fiscal year 2025.

Here is the problem in plain English: Washington is again spending far more than it collects. Every year’s shortfall must be borrowed and added to the national debt. America must first eliminate that yearly deficit and produce a surplus before it can begin paying down the debt itself.

My previously discussed figure of approximately $1.3 trillion in annual debt reduction was a hypothetical target — not an official government forecast. It assumed that border enforcement, domestic energy, deregulation, tariffs, reshoreing and substantial spending reductions would work together.

Congress cannot be treated as a spectator. Presidents propose policies and administer existing laws, but Congress approves taxes, spending and permanent reforms. Senators who prevent legislation from receiving a vote share responsibility when its intended results cannot be achieved. Those who approve legislation must also accept responsibility for its actual costs.

Immigration enforcement provides an example. The administration established a goal of one million deportations annually, supported by at least 3,000 ICE arrests per day. Arrests and completed deportations are different measurements, and current deportations average approximately 1,200 per day. Court proceedings, detention space, transportation and foreign-government cooperation affect that number. If Congress expects stronger enforcement, it must provide lawful authority and resources — and then demand measurable results.

Federal Medicaid financing supplies another example. Federal officials concluded that certain state financing arrangements generated additional federal money and freed state funds for programs such as California’s healthcare coverage for undocumented residents. The federal government has acted to close that financing loophole.

Neither automatic support nor automatic rejection is responsible government. Congress should vote openly, publish credible cost estimates and measure results. Tucker Carlson’s opposition to war and debt should not erase every other issue. Likewise, supporting Trump should not prevent Congress from scrutinizing the costs of his proposals. Americans deserve to know what succeeded, what failed and who was responsible — without throwing out an entire program over one disagreement.

Finally, give representatives and senators six-year terms, limit them to two terms, and stagger their elections so one-third face the voters every two years.

— Rick Farinelli,

Madera

Vice President JD Vance recently warned voters not to “throw the baby out with the bathwater.” That describes an important question facing Republicans who disagree with President Trump over war, debt or another individual policy: Should one disagreement cause them to reject his entire program? I can usually foretell the inevitable twist, but not this time. Lisa Scottoline is a one-of-a-kind author, and “After Anna” (2018, 369 pages in paperback format) is arguably her best domestic novel.

The story is told from two POVs, Maggie’s and her husband Noah’s. For the most part, they alternate chapters, Maggie from wherever the plot is at the time, and Noah from the witness chair during a trial. He’s being tried for first-degree murder, the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming, and his wife will not testify on his behalf. That’s the first clue that all is not well in Maggie and Noah’s household.

Maggie was married before Noah. She and her first husband Florian Desroches had a baby girl, Anna. Shortly thereafter, Maggie developed postpartum psychosis, and Florian hit the jackpot by selling his start-up for $20 million. When he files for divorce, the court grants dual legal custody of Anna to the parents, but physical custody to Florian because Maggie is an “unfit” mother.

Maggie is now in a successful and happy second marriage, and she longs for a connection to the daughter she hasn’t been able to contact for 17 years. Meanwhile, Florian has remarried, fathered two more children, and plunked Anna down in expensive boarding schools in Europe and America. During that time, Anna hasn’t wanted anything to do with Maggie because of the stories that Florian has told her over the years.

Tragedy strikes. A plane that Florian is piloting in France crashes, killing him and his entire family, except for Anna, who is boarding at Congreve School in Maine. One day, Maggie receives a phone call from Anna, who is pleasant and receptive to meeting for lunch. Maggie is in seventh heaven. At the meeting, Anna reveals that her whole family has died and that she’s been very unhappy at Congreve.

Maggie invites Anna to live with her, Noah, and Noah’s son Caleb, who is struggling with apraxia, a condition that makes it difficult for him to pronounce words. Before the day is over, Anna is packed and transported to Maggie’s home in Pennsylvania. Initially, Anna is delighted with Noah, a pediatric allergist; Caleb, whom she finds to be adorable; and, of course, her birth mother, who is now a well-adjusted wife, mother, and member of the community.

At this point, the reader wonders: Can this storybook situation last? Long-time Scottoline fans, like me, know the answer. With Ms. Scottoline at the keyboard, there’s going to be so much more to the story that it will be nearly impossible to put the book down. She is truly a genius at metamorphosing reality from the perspectives of her characters. As various “truths” are revealed to Maggie, she comes to question everything in her perfect world, including her ability to be a fit mother.

If you’re a fan of domestic mystery, don’t miss this one.

• • •

Puede contactar a Jim Glynn en j_glynn@att.net.

The twists, which come late in the book, surprised me, and I’ve been reading murder mysteries for more than half a century.
