Ochoa’s kick cut the lead to 28-14.

The Coyotes recovered the ensuing onsides kick, but a penalty was called. Edison started its next drive at the 17, and drove 83-yards on 10 plays open a 35-14 lead.

Smith returned the ensuing kick-off 35 yards to the Madera 43. Then, Smith got the hand-off, and gained six to the Edison 47. He was tackled, sort of. He fell on the Edison tackler, and never touched the ground. Smith kept his momentum going, and ran down the left sideline fro a 45-yard gain to the Edison eight.

Two plays later, Mena hit the hole behind Martinez for a seven-yard touchdown.

Edison answered four plays later after a 42-yard kick return with a 15-yard penalty added on. But, in their four losses, the Stallions haven’t scored more than 15 points, and 32 points total.

Diego Reyna Navarro led the Toros with 102 yard rushing, averaging 8.5 per carry. Also emerging as QB1 for the Stallions has been John Ledesma, who scored three rushing touchdowns and threw for another.

Fresno got the ball first, and drove to the Madera South 32 before throwing incomplete on fourth-and-23. Fresno went nine plays on the drive, but a sack by A.J. Alvarez sent the Warriors in the wrong direction.

Reyna Navarro gained 20 yards on the second play. Ledesma hit Jonathan Buendia on a quick pass over the middle for 11 yards. Then, Reyna Navarro went round the right side, and gained 18 yards behind the block of Lucas Amezquita on the edge.

Ledesma had a wide-open walk-in touchdown from two yards out for a 7-0 lead. Michael Cuevas hit the extra point.

Keyed by a tackle for loss from Jeremiah Armenta, the Warriors had to punt. The punt snap was a slow lob to the punter. The rush from the Stallions forced the punter to bring the ball down, and Alvarez mad the tackle for a loss of 15, and set the Stallions up in good field position.

Reyna Navarro kept the option around the right side for a 34-yard gain, helped by a block from William Hernandez. Three plays later, Ledesma kept the ball on an option for a two-yard touchdown, and a 13-0 lead.

Alvarez forced a three-out-out with another tackle for loss. The Stallions went on their longest drive of the game, 10 plays, but had to punt. The punt went was short, but rolled 20 yards to the Fresno 10, which set up a Madera South score.

Two plays later, Fresno mishandled the hand-off, and Adrian Flores came up with the recovery for the Stallions at the Fresno six.

On fourth-and-goal from the one, Reyna Navarro scored for a 20-0 lead.

The Warriors came back and, helped by two Stallions’ 15-yard penalties, scored on a 26-yard pass play to cut the lead to 20-7.

Cuevas returned the ensuing kick-off 80 yards for a touchdown, but an illegal block penalty was called, and the Stallions ran out the half.

The Stallions used six straight running plays to open the second half with a score. Cuevas recovered a Fresno onsides kick try. Ledesma carried for six on third-and-six. George Roberts went around the left side behind the blocks of Reyna Navarro and Cuevas on the edge for a 22-yard gain.

Ledesma went up the middle, and bounced to his left at the line of scrimmage, and went down the left sideline for a 16-yard touchdown run. Reyna Navarro ran in the two-point conversion for a 28-7 lead.

Fresno was forced to punt, and the Stallions’ rush forced the punter to try to run, and Charles Moore made the tackle for a three-yard loss.

Madera South drew Fresno offsides on third down. Then, Reyna Navarro got the carry, and hit the pile for a four-yard gain. However, he kept driving, and got help from his teammates, for a 13-yard gain to the 17.

Three plays later, Ledesma tried a pass on the right that was almost intercepted. The Fresno defender tipped the ball in the air, but intended receiver Adam Moreno caught the tip, and ran it into the end zone for the touchdown, and a 34-7 lead.

The Warriors got a 13-yard gain and a 19-yard gain to midfield. However, Ledesma caught a Fresno pass at the Stallions’ 40 for the interception, and returned it to the Fresno 20.

Two Roberts runs for 10 yards gave the Stallions a first-and-goal. On the next play, Adam Sandez got the call on the left side. He went behind the block of Buendia and Alvarez, who put a player on his back, and blocked two defenders at the same time, to score for a 41-7 lead after a Cuevas kick to end the game.

The Madera South Stallions rebounded from its first two-game losing streak of the season to roll over the Fresno Warriors with a 41-7 victory at McLane Stadium. Quarterback Adalynn Chavez rushed for 101 yards, including a 65-yard scamper, and led the Toros to 174 rushing yards.

Chavez and Crystal Galicia combined for 200 yards throwing. Chavez accounted for six touchdowns, and Galicia scored the other. Amerie Lujan caught four passes for 74 yards, and a touchdown.

Madera South was limited to just nine yards on the ground. Four different quarterbacks combined to throw for 71 yards on 15 completions.

On the first possession of the game, the Stallions went backwards, and punted from the one-yard line.

The Toros took over just inside midfield. After a nine-yard run from Karina Contreras, Chavez found Lujan for a score. Lujan caught a pass down the field, and escaped a tackle at the 10 for the touchdown. Chavez found Isabella Perez in the back corner of the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 8:49 left in the first.

After a trade in possessions, the Stallions put together a nice drive. Maya Manzo hit Jaziyah McFarland for a 10-yard gain into Torres territory. On third-and-23, Manzo found Jayleen Gutierrez for 28 yards, and a first down.

Two plays later, Manzo hit McFarland for a six-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left in the quarter. The point after conversion failed, and Torres led 7-6.

On the second play of the second quarter, Chavez was chased out to her left from the pocket. She tucked the ball, and ran down the left sideline. Three Stallions had a chance for a flag pull, and missed. Chavez broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run, and a 13-6 lead just 44 seconds into the second quarter.

Two plays later, Galicia picked off a Stallions’ pass to set the Toros up. One the next play, Chavez found Lujan in the back of the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown. Chavez hit Lujan on the conversion for a 21-6 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.

On the next play, Jazmine Garcia stepped in front of the intended Stallions receiver for an interception at the 15, and ran it into the end zone for the touchdown, for a 27-6 lead, just 32 seconds after the previous score.

The Torres defense forced a Stallions’ punt, and Contreras returned it 26 yards into Stallions’ territory.

Three plays later, Chavez lofted a ball to the end zone, and Contreras made an over-the-shoulder catch behind Stallions’ defenders for the touchdown, and a 33-6 lead.

Two plays later, Galicia picked off another Stallions’ pass, and returned it to the five.

On the next play, Chavez found Cadence Mortier in the back of the end zone for the touchdown, and a 39-6 lead heading into the half.

Both teams battled through in the second half. After an initial first down to open the second half, Chavez was picked off by Madera South’s Natalia Gutierrez.

McFarland scrambled for an initial first down for the Stallions. But, on the next play, McFarland was picked off. Her pass was deflected by her own receiver, and Torres’ Alexa Rocha-Cervantes slid in for the interception.

The Toros went on their longest drive of the game, 11 plays, but didn’t come away with any points.

Emily Avila rushed for 14 yards, and a first down. Chavez hit Contreras for eight yards on fourth-and three, and found Contreras for a two-yard gain to give the Toros first-and-goal.

After three straight incompletions, Chavez tried a fourth down pass, but Madera South’s Gutierrez broke up the pass.

The Toros forced a punt, but the Toros turned the ball over on downs.

After a Madera South punt, the Toros finally got on the second half scoreboard. Galicia found Contreras for 10 yards, and then found Lujan for 21 more on fourth-and-13.

Galicia hit Contreras for 10, then ran for 11, and hit Contreras for 10 more to the one. She has a Ph.D. from Stanford in molecular electronics, whatever that is, and she appears to have her sights set on taking over the project. But, fortunately for Dr. Crone, somebody has strangled and dismembered her. Naturally, when most of her body washes up next to a pier in San Diego, suspicion falls on Dr. Crone, a highly respected medical researcher who contacts Paul Madriani to represent him.

Madriani is the protagonist in many of Steve Martini’s previous books, but in “The Jury” (2001, 291 pages in hardback format), he and his partner Harry Hines are mysteriously in San Diego, not in their usual haunts in San Francisco. Why Madriani and Hines have moved south is never explained by the author. That’s only one of things that seems to be left to the reader’s imagination. The book’s title is also confusing because there in very little written about the jury, although most of the novel is set in the courtroom. But, as is the custom in Martini’s books, the deck is stacked against his client.

There is a “mountain of evidence” against Crone, to cite the expression used by Marcia Clark in the O.J. Simpson trial. Forensic clues are found in Crone’s garage. Moreover, Kalista had accused him of sexual harassment. And it is common knowledge that she has been angling for his job. Armed with this ammunition, veteran prosecutor Evan Tannery becomes convinced that Crone is guilty. His opinion is cemented and unchanged even when a key prosecution witness dies unexpectedly, leaving a self-incriminating note.

Because of the dogged determination of Tannery, Madriani knows that, to prove his client’s innocence, he must uncover the real murderer. But his fact-finding efforts are blocked because of his client’s refusal to talk about any aspect of his research or Kalista’s role on his team. All that Madriani is allowed to know is that, if the research pans out, it could be a major breakthrough in medicine, and that would be worth billions of dollars. Of course, industrial espionage must not be allowed, and Crone seems to value that even more than avoiding a possible life sentence in prison.

One reviewer wrote, “So much of the action in this courtroom thriller happens outside the jury’s purview that it makes one wonder if there’s a touch of irony intended in the title.” I asked myself the same question. Another reviewer ended his comments with: “The outline for a much better novel is here: glamorous victim, well-connected defendant, bulldog prosecutor, resourceful defender, weighty issues. What a shame that everything that would make it memorable has been left blank, right down to the jury.”

Although I agree with both reviewers, I have to admit that I enjoyed the book. Martini’s writing style keeps the reader glued to the pages, always wondering about what happens next. If I had to give stars, I’d award this novel a three of a possible five, but that would not dissuade me from reading Martini’s next book.

• • •

Puede contactar a Jim Glynn en j_glynn@att.net.

Beautiful former African American model Kalista Jordan has joined Professor David Crone’s research team at the university.
