A groundbreaking ceremony was held on at the corner of A Street and Yosemite Avenue for the State Route 145 Improvement Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project will make improvements throughout a four-mile stretch of State Route 145, which will include repaving, restriping, adding bike lanes, and adding several roundabouts. There will also be many decorative improvements, enhancing the beauty of the corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thursday\u2019s ceremony was met with much enthusiasm and encouragement as participants explained the history of the project and what it took to get where they are today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Larry Johnson, Caltrans District 6 Public Information Officer, served as master of ceremonies at the event. He gave a warm welcome to all attendees as he introduced himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very special moment,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very special project, and it\u2019s been a long time in coming, but necessary. It\u2019s a good collaboration between us and the city, and we\u2019re really excited about it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Director Michael Navarro from Caltrans District 6 spoke about his involvement in the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m excited to be here today, more than you know. I feel like this project has been almost the length in my entire career. I started Caltrans about 26 years ago in 2000,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of the projects I reviewed were along the 145 corridor, and there were a lot of conversations back and forth with the city over the years about what to do with this corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He went on to explain that working with Caltrans meant focusing on highways, but the City of Madera had a different kind of vision for their downtown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the City worked with legislative issues over the last few decades, Caltrans finally decided to initiate a project in 2018 that was essentially just going to overlay this project at 145 through downtown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAround that same time, we partnered and collaborated with the city of Madera on a Caltrans planning grant,\u201d Navarro said. \u201cIt was about $275,000 that allowed the city to do some strategic engagement and working with the downtown community to develop a true vision of what you\u2019re going to see here on this downtown 145 corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that the project evolved from what was about a $9 million rehab to about a $26 million transformational downtown revitalization project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He thanked the City of Madera for their leadership, and for the people who had the vision for this community of Madera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lee Ann Eager, Commissioner of the California Transportation Commission spoke about how big the project was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn case you don\u2019t know what it is that we do, we approve the projects and we write the big checks,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd this particular project is one of our largest of the kind. The CTC has put in so far about $22.5 million into the street here. And we\u2019re so excited to partner with Caltrans and the city and the county to look at the dream of what we want for this area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eager said she was born and raised in Fresno, but she had family in Madera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI remember trying to run across the street here,\u201d she said. \u201cAs traffic went by and trucks went by, I remember, even as a youngster, saying, \u2018How come there\u2019s a freeway going through downtown?\u2019 And we all know what happens when they first start looking at the transportation system in California, they didn\u2019t care about separating communities. They just put roads in, and now all of us have been trying since then to remedy that to fix.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eager thanked the Madera City Council and others who have been diligent in seeing that this project comes to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCongratulations to Caltrans. Congratulations. to the people of Madera for making this dream come true,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mayor of Madera, Cece Gallegos, who was born and raised in Madera, spoke of the partnerships it took to make this project happen for Madera. She noted all the support that has been given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a $28 million project, and we have invested $5 million to do the sewer and water, which you\u2019ve kind of seen the construction happening in the last few months,\u201d she said. \u201cWith these improvements, it\u2019s going to include beautiful things, medium islands, the lighting, beautiful landscaping that you can\u2019t even imagine with the trees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She thanked the Caltrans staff, all the commissioners and organizations involved, and the residents of Madera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause with all the construction happening, they\u2019re going to be patient with everything that\u2019s happening,\u201d Gallegos said. \u201cTheir businesses are going to thrive after this, and I know a lot more is going to come to make downtown beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is what we talk about when we talk about hometown pride. That\u2019s what Madera truly is, hometown pride. We take pride in what we have here.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jose Rodriguez is a Madera City Council member, but also an MCTC Commissioner. He thanked all who attended this ceremony, as well as all who were involved to make this project happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis moment has been years in the making, from the early design concepts to countless hours of stakeholder and community input,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I think that\u2019s important to show because when the early design concept came about, Will Oliver, who was then on City Council, had engaged with Caltrans to try to get that design process going and get the grant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He, too, thanked many who had been involved in the process of making the project happen for Madera, noting the hard work of the City Manager, Arnoldo Rodriguez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To the City Manager, who was at the ceremony, Jose Rodriguez said, \u201cYour leadership, your unwavering support to enhance State Route 145, born and raised in Madera, you know the needs of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The final speaker was George Buenrostro, owner of TJ\u2019s Bar & Grill, which is in downtown Madera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn behalf of Madera business owners, thank you, Caltrans and the City for making this happen for downtown Madera,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a collaborative effort dedicated to helping guide at-risk youth toward a brighter future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through this program, students visit each participating agency to learn about the real-life consequences of poor choices, hear firsthand from a formerly justice-involved young adult about the impact of their decisions, and build positive relationships with law enforcement and community partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each student also leaves with contact information for program staff, ensuring they have trusted resources and support moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe OPTIONS Program is about giving students the guidance and support they need before poor choices become lifelong consequences,\u201d said Lawrence Fernandez, Director of Safety and Security of MUSD. \u201cBy working together with our law enforcement and community partners, we\u2019re helping young people see that they have positive paths forward and people who believe in their success. The Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Department issued a missing adult bulletin over the weekend for 29-year-old Dau \u201cChristopher\u201d Pham, who was last seen in the Oakhurst area, possibly headed towards Yosemite, Angel Falls, Bass Lake or Sierra National Forest trails last week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office issued a statement Wednesday that Pham had been located deceased in the Oakhurst area. No foul play is suspected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the course of this investigation, Madera County Sheriff\u2019s deputies, detectives, Search and Rescue personnel, and dedicated volunteers spent countless hours following leads, conducting searches, and working tirelessly in an effort to locate Pham. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office deputies responded to a report of a stolen UTV from the Road 416 area, and was later seen traveling northbound on State Route 41. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After brief pursuit by CHP on Sunday, the suspect abandoned the vehicle near SR41 and Celechovsky Court before fleeing on foot into the brush toward Road 425. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A short time later, the suspect was captured on a Ring camera on Serpa Canyon tampering with a residential water pump. He fled again when CHP officers arrived. CHP Air Operations searched the area, but the suspect was not located due to the dense vegetation and rugged terrain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later that afternoon, the suspect was located in Camp Oakhurst off Mudge Ranch Road. Camp Oakhurst staff escorted the suspect off the property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect, later identified as Kevin Marquez, is believed to have trespassed on private property and committed a grand theft in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just before 7 a.m. on Tuesday, MCSO deputies were dispatched to a suspicious person call in the area of Mudge Ranch Road. A homeowner reported that a man matching the description of the wanted suspect was at their front door asking them to make a phone call on his behalf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputies quickly responded, and saturated the area after positively identifying the man as the same suspect sought the previous day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputies, assisted by K9 Obie, located Marquez hiding behind a brush pile across the roadway. Marquez was taken into custody without incident, and booked into the Madera County Jail.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The Madera National Little League Senior (16-under) softball team won the NorCal Championship last weekend behind a no-hitter thrown by Dallas Chavira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Madera National All-Stars opened the tournament with a 12-2 victory over Foothill on July 10 with a 6 p.m. game. They came back at 9 a.m. the next morning, and defeated Suisun, 7-0, to advance to the semifinals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the second game of a back-to-back, Madera National defeated Colusa, 15-4 to advance to the championship game two days later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After waiting through the consolation bracket games on Sunday, Madera National closed the tournament with a dominant 13-0 victory over Colusa on Monday They defeated their opponents by a combined 47-6 in the tournament. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The victory is Madera National\u2019s first-ever softball State Championship. They are also the first-ever Madera National team (baseball or softball) to win the state title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They now head the Montana for the West Regionals in Missoula, beginning July 23. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madera National will host a car wash on Sunday from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Shoettler Tire. Every dollar helps get the team to Montana to represent the community at Regionals. Donations are also accepted through venmo (@maderanationalLL) or Cash App ($maderanational) and write Senior All Stars in the memo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the track season, Matilda Torres Toros\u2019 Alfonso Del Toro came on strong and closed his high school career by leading the Toros to the Div. II Championship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Del Toro was a late bloomer. He burst on the scene with a 9:18 in the 3,200 meters at the Buchanan Distance Classic, blowing away his previous personal best by more than 30 seconds. He has since lowered his personal best to 8:58.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBreaking nine was a surprise. I was so happy it happened. It felt really good to get past that barrier,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Del Toro joined three other Torres teammates \u2014 Benjamin Fernandez, Hunter Hannah and Azarel Barrios-Meza \u2014 by singing a National Letter of Intent to a four-year college. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s impressive,\u201d Del Toro said. \u201cI\u2019m happy that all of us was able to do something like this. It shows how good the team\u2019s program really was. I don\u2019t think I would have been able to do this. I thought Ben and Hunter had a higher chance from the team. I never really had high hopes for me. Now that it happened, it\u2019s crazy to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Del Toro, who earned a 3.6 grade point average at Torres will head to the University of Portland to run cross country and track. He plans to major in civil engineering, but is already thinking about getting into the physical therapy pathway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to do something like that,\u201d he said. \u201cNow that the opportunity has arisen, it\u2019s calling my name more. In high school, I regretted doing something in the lines of health in high school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Del Toro was also considering Sacramento State and UC Riverside, but Portland came with a good offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen I reached out to them, they reached back with a really good offer,\u201d he said. \u201cOverall, they had the better team than the other schools. I took a visit. It was good. I met the entire team. Everyone was nice. They all talked a lot, but the people I talked to the most were the ones that were leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Del Toro considered his Torres career pretty good, but it started off slow and took a while to start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI had a break out race in track, and it blew up,\u201d Del Toro said about his run at the Buchanan Distance Classic. \u201cI wanted it more. I was hungrier, and I wanted to run up there with Ben and Hunter. It showed how much improvement can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Del Toro participated in the school\u2019s signing party with other NLI signees, but signed his actual letter just a few days before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was kind of nervous because I didn\u2019t want to mess anything up. I didn\u2019t want to do anything that would ruin this,\u201d he said. \u201cMy mentality changed this year. I always wanted to be fast and run for a Div. I college. I was never there. This year, I became more conscious of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Del Toro earned four rings with the Toros \u2014 three in cross country and one in track \u2014 after not running his freshman year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although his parents are proud of his decision, Del Toro said they didn\u2019t think he would go that far away from home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy mom was happy I am traveling and going where I want to go,\u201d he said. \u201cShe would prefer me to be closer, but she\u2019s happy for me. I\u2019m scared about going to Portland. I\u2019m going to leave everything here to go over there. Hopefully, nothing changes when I\u2019m gone. I don\u2019t want to miss out on much while I\u2019m gone. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The thing that Del Toro, and the rest of his Torres teammates, will miss is the brotherhood they created. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m happy every single one of us is going to a college that will be good for them,\u201d he said. \u201cWe did a good job of becoming a family. Those are guys that I\u2019m going to invite to my wedding. They are here for my life. I\u2019ve been running with them for the past six years. I\u2019m going to miss those guys a lot. The Triumph Volleyball Academy sent three teams to the 2026 Boys Junior Volleyball National Championship last week in Phoenix, Arizona.<\/p>\n\n
All three teams earned a podium finish, which also earned TVA, a Madera and Fresno-based volleyball club team, the prestigious Power Belt, which is awarded to the club who had the most teams to place on the podium.<\/p>\n\n
The 15-under team placed second in the 15 USA Division to earn a silver medal. Featured on the team are libero Caleb McDonald from Madera and setter Josh Perez from Liberty.<\/p>\n\n
The 16-under team won the 16 Club Championship, and was coached by Madera Coyote boys volleyball assistant and Fresno City College assistant, Nate Perez. On the team were a number of Madera-area players, including seven Coyotes.<\/p>\n\n
George Kirk represented Matilda Torres as an outside hitter. Playing from Madera were Lennox Rodriguez (setter), Paul Villarreal (middle blocker), Abel Perez (middle blocker) and Aiden Alvarez (pin hitter). Madera\u2019s Aiden Gates (setter) and Gabriel Campa (libero) were named to the All-BJNC team, and pin hitter Sean Ruiz was the 16s Division Most Valuable Player.<\/p>\n\n

The Americans made a nice run, but a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the knockout stage left a sour taste in our mouths. However, the U.S. is young and will be more hungry the next time around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain is a solid team, all-around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Nic Landeros, former Madera Coyotes boys soccer coach<\/strong> \u2014 2-1, Spain. He even predicted the goals \u2014 Oyarzabel and Merino, off the bench, for Spain and Fernandez for Argentina. He will be watching with his NLM Next team at a College Showcase in Davis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Marco Gomez, Matilda Torres Toros girls soccer coach and member of the 1998 Coyote Valley Championship team<\/strong> \u2014 2-1, Spain or 3-2 Argentina. For the first prediction, Spain plays well as a team. They are patient and look to keep the ball by controlling possession. If Messi can\u2019t get the ball on his feet, then he can\u2019t hurt them, They pick and choose their attack. They overload opponents\u2019 sides with the wings and overlapping outside backs. They are young and hungry. For the second prediction, Messi and Argentina have proven that you can\u2019t count them out, even when down 2-0. With Spain using an overload method of attack, it does leave them open for counterattacks, which Argentina is very good at, which is why it could also be a high scoring match. Buildings, vehicles, salaries, benefits and telephones. That\u2019s where I come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I was the guy on my knees stapling wire around the baseboards when HUD, EOC and other programs came in. For eight years, I did the phones at Fresno County Hospital\/Fresno General\/ Valley Medical Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Planning, welfare, methadone program \u2014 I was there when they invented mental health! Talk about the \u201cfly on the wall.\u201d That was me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These programs started with minimal staff, and shazzam, turned into mega productions. They were taking out patient rooms to make offices! I could hear those employees. They were about as sharp as yesterdays mash potatoes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n How many programs do we have now? Not just hand out stuff. So called \u201chand up\u201d stuff. School districts. Programs forever! <\/p>\n\n\n\n For most, success does not pay. Failure does. Programs, unemployment, disability, childcare, SNAP, welfare, housing. Guaranteed income. Unearned income tax credits (what is that?) Medical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n OK, so\u2026 just where do we start fixing stupid? And if we can\u2019t \u2014 then what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then, we have to ask: Are they stupid?
