Kay Nell Sienze, born Feb. 1, 1941, in Madera, California, passed away on Aug. 27, 2026, in Madera, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kay was a longtime office manager for a pediatric medical office, where she retired after 25 years. She also worked for many years at Madera Flower Shop, delivering flowers throughout the community. She earned an Associate\u2019s Degree in Liberal Arts and a Master Gardener certificate both from Fresno City College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kay was a member of the Madera Quilting Guild and the Sew-N-Sew group. She was an accomplished quilter who won numerous blue ribbons, including Best of Show awards, at the Madera Fair. She enjoyed dining at restaurants and taking drives around the community to admire the beautiful landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was preceded in death by her father, John McKenzie; mother, Martha Whitlow; stepfather, Carl Whitlow; sisters, Mary Dal Cerro and Onvie Williams; and first husband, Jack Bacon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kay is survived by her loving husband of 21 years, Victor Sienze; sons, Shawn Bacon (Amy) and Ryan Sienze; daughters, Sherry Olguin (Oscar) and Sandra Bacon; grandchildren, Kyle Olguin, Evan Olguin, Ashley Minyard, and Dustin Minyard; many step-grandchildren; and her special niece, Toni Amy (James).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kay will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and many members of the Madera community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beverly was born on Nov. 19, 1940, to her parents, Gerald King and Thelma Brewster King, and is survived by her younger sister, Barbara Ruth King of Eugene, Oregon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born and raised in Madera, California, she graduated from Madera Union High in 1958 and moved to San Jose, where she earned her cosmetology degree. She soon moved to Los Angeles, where she flourished in her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After 30 years, Beverly returned home to Madera for the remainder of her life, continuing her love of making people feel and look their best! Her passion for baking, writing, vintage jewelry, fashion, and animals kept her very busy and happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James \u201cJim\u201d Virgil Van Buren was born on Oct. 11, 1939, in Scott City, Kansas, to Virgil and Lois Van Buren. He passed away on Aug. 20, 2026, at the age of 86. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jim graduated from Madera High School and entered the United States Navy. On March 19, 1960, he married the love of his life, Barbara. After completing his service in the Navy, Jim and Barbara returned to Madera, where he began working as a hydrographer for the Madera Irrigation District. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jim was preceded in death by Barbara, his beloved wife of 63 years; his parents, Virgil and Lois Van Buren; his sister, Wanda Jensen; and his daughter-in-law, Sharyne Van Buren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jim is survived by his three children: Jim Van Buren; Kerry Arnold and her husband, Joseph; and Kristin Chavira and her husband, Richard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was blessed with six grandchildren: Michael Arnold and his wife, Kimberly; Steven Chavira and his wife, Monica; Jennifer Wharton and her husband, Jeff; Bryan Chavira and his wife, Deborah; Katherine Villegas and her husband, Victor; and Amy Nehring and her husband, Jordan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jim was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren: Graciela, Richard, and Eliseo Chavira; Penelope and Ezekiel Chavira; Aydan, Lyla, Zachariah, and Ezra Nehring; Madilyn Rose and Theodore Alton Villegas; and Emily Grace and Ryan James Wharton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gloria Romero, candidate for California Lieutenant Governor, spoke at the Madera County Republican Women\u2019s meeting last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A former California State Senator, Romero is a nationally recognized leader on education reform and school choice. She was first elected to the State Senate in 2001, and represented East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. She became the first woman to serve as Senate Majority Leader in California history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prior to the Senate, Romero served as Majority Whip in the California State Assembly, on the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees, and on the Los Angeles Elected Charter Reform Commission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Romero has been a consistent advocate for charter schools, parental empowerment, and merit-based education reform, believing education to be the central civil rights issue of our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her father worked on the railroads, and her mother had only a sixth-grade education. Romero knew education was important, and earned a PhD from the University of California. She served as a professor at Cal State Los Angeles, where she was named Professor Emeritus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now, Romero is running for Lt. Governor of California to continue her legacy of fighting for quality education reform, as well as to reduce our state\u2019s cost of living so that Californians can restore opportunity, affordability, and the California Dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2024, she switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, because she felt the Democratic Party had abandoned working-class families and removed parental rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMost people have no idea what a lieutenant governor does,\u201d she said in her speech Thursday to the Republican Women. She explained that most people think this position is just one that takes over if something happens to the governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut there\u2019s a lot more to the Lieutenant Governor\u2019s position,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Lieutenant Governor is the President of the Senate, which is the body that confirms all the nominations that come from the governor. What else does the lieutenant governor do? The lieutenant governor serves on every board of education in California, our universities, our Cal States, and our community colleges. And this is the part that inspires me. My mother had a sixth-grade level of education. I have a PhD. I understand that education is what lifts us out of poverty. It\u2019s what makes us equal in America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Romero is Hispanic, and she talked about the Latino community and the need for them to become more proficient and educated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHere in Madera, when we take a look at the Latino community, only 38 percent of Latino children in the Madera schools today read at basic levels of proficiency. In math, it\u2019s only 28 percent. That is not acceptable anywhere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One educator she has admired was Jaime Escalante, made famous by the movie Stand and Deliver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe inspired us never to accept that kids, because of their skin color, or ethnicity, or the language they speak, what zip code they come from, cannot do the work. Escalante worked with Latino children in East LA and he showed that when you bring about teachers with the strong credentials, we can reform the system of education. There\u2019s a lot to reform,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJaime Escalante really emphasized, not only to the students, but to the parents as well. First thing I\u2019m going to do is to connect the systems,\u201d she said. \u201cTK-12 through higher education. We have a problem now. We are admitting students into the University of California, one of the most prestigious systems in the world. And the kids can\u2019t do math. The professors have had to basically dumb down the curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt can\u2019t happen. We will never compete with China or India or Russia or the world. They are being pushed through the system.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She went on to explain that Escalante challenged us never to give in to the soft bigotry of low expectations. He didn\u2019t care if these kids were poor. He didn\u2019t care if they came from East LA. He didn\u2019t care that many of them lived right off the freeway. Many of them had just single mother homes, but he said, \u201cYou\u2019re in my classroom. You\u2019re going to work. You\u2019re going to learn.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the kind of reform Romero is trying to make as lieutenant governor of the State of California. She has been fighting for school choice for years, which put her at odds with the Democratic Party. She explained that the executive boards of the teachers\u2019 unions are what is causing the education systems to fail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll find every reform possible,\u201d she said. \u201cEven from the teaching of phonics in our school system. When we talk about the low reading levels, it\u2019s not because a kid is dumb. You have to have the right system of teaching. Phonics is internationally recognized. It\u2019s probably what most of us grew up learning. You\u2019ve got to have phonics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though her main passion is education, she explained that the role of Lieutenant Governor is more than just one facet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs lieutenant governor, you\u2019re basically looking at the chief ambassador for the economy of California. And we know today that California is number one in homelessness in the nation. We\u2019re number one in poverty in the nation. We\u2019re number one in taxation in the nation. And the governor walks around saying, we are the fourth largest economy in the world,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause you\u2019re large doesn\u2019t mean you are good. We have a lot to change in California. This was not the California we grew up with. We are losing families, especially young people, out of California. Home ownership is basically the key to entry into the middle class. If any of you follow Central American or Latin American politics, these are one-party rules. We talk about banana republics, we\u2019ve had one party rule in California for 16 years.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Romero is hopeful to team up with Steve Hilton as lieutenant governor and governor of California. Hilton is a Republican who has been campaigning throughout California, touting his plans to make California a better state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd that\u2019s what you\u2019re going to find with the Steve Hilton and Gloria Romero. But you\u2019ve got to have the Gloria with the Steve,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She explained that Hilton is relatively new in politics, so he will need someone like her to be his teammate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a reformer,\u201d she joked. \u201cBut I know where the bodies are buried. I know the rules. In the Bible, we have images of leadership, whether it\u2019s Proverbs or Jeremiah or other chapters. There are many places in the Bible that talk about good leaders. They look out for the people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Romero grew up in a home that was solid Democrat, a very Catholic home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe had pictures of the Pope and John F. Kennedy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, she believes there are no more Democrats. The party she knew has changed through the years, and she believes she did not leave the Democratic Party. She believes the party left her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey are socialist communists today,\u201d she said, with disappointment. \u201cSo, I began to leave the party. I worked in Sacramento, and when I left in 2010, I was considered to be an honorary Republican back then. It was mostly because I believed in school choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Romero speaks for much of the Latino community, who stand for faith, family, and freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very patriotic community,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want fairness in immigration. We support law and order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She wants to get the message out in Spanish, so the Latino community will be more informed about her messages to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Romero stated that the Central Valley is overwhelmingly Spanish-speaking, and the backbone that holds up California, noting the vast community of Hispanics in this area, and the conservative nature of the Central Valley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee the area toward California State Route 99 in what was described as a small white SUV, similar to a RAV4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The suspect was identified as David Moreno, 51. He was last seen driving a white SUV similar to a RAV4 in an unknown direction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Madera County Sheriffs detectives checked a possible address, and observed the suspect leave in the same vehicle.
