Leona Carol Pistoresi, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on July 24, 2026, at the age of 84 following a brief illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born to Lawrence (Pat) and Juanita (Nellie) Pittz in Merced and raised in Chowchilla, Leona’s creative spirit was evident from an early age. As a child, she loved building forts and playhouses from scraps left over from her father’s construction projects. She also delighted in asking neighbors for cuttings from their gardens, carefully nurturing them into beautiful gardens of her own. That lifelong love of gardening flourished, and as an adult, Leona became known for having one of the most amazing gardens in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During her years at Chowchilla High School, Leona was well-liked by classmates and elected Student Body President. She was a majorette, played on the tennis team, and was crowned Homecoming Queen. It was there that she met and fell in love with Monte Pistoresi. They married when Leona was 19 and shared 65 wonderful years together, raising four children and building a life centered on church, family, and the many activities of their children. Monte was the love of her life, and she missed him deeply following his passing in April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lifelong learner, Leona pursued higher education after her children were grown, earning a Bachelor\u2019s degree from the University of San Francisco and a Master of Social Work from California State University, Fresno. Her intellectual curiosity never faded. She explored subjects ranging from religion and nutrition to the power of positive thinking, and, at the age of 80, began taking piano lessons simply for the joy of learning. Leona’s professional career reflected her dedication to education and service. She spent more than 20 years at Chowchilla High School, serving as Registrar, teacher, and ultimately retiring as Career Center Director. She also earned her real estate license and served as an adjunct faculty member at Merced College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Above all, Leona will be remembered for her compassion. She lived with an open heart and had a remarkable gift for welcoming and caring for those who needed encouragement, often “adopting” people who were struggling or alone. Her generosity, kindness, gratitude, and unending desire to learn touched the lives of countless people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leona shared a special bond with each of her seven grandchildren, creating treasured memories that will be carried forward for generations. Family vacations to Pajaro Dunes and later Bass Lake became beloved traditions. Themed Thanksgivings, joyful Christmas celebrations, and attending their sporting events, school plays, recitals, performances, and tea parties were among the many moments that brought the family together and will be fondly remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leona was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Monte; her brother, Jack; and her sister, Laurali. She is survived by her brother, Frank; her children, Tim (Jonae), Mike (Celeste), Patti, and Ted (Patty); her seven grandchildren, Katie, Vincent, Stephen, Nick, Sami, Selena, and Thomas; and her seven great-grandchildren, Gianna, Vienna, Ellie, Enzo, Violet, Rory, and Louise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N Street, at noon, and then the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be later at Love INC\u2019s new location at the old Teco building at 880 S. Pine Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The organization is not new to Madera, but it was dormant for about 12 months. A few years ago, the director retired and the operations slowed down without the needed leadership. Alvarado was asked to be director, and she graciously accepted the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen we opened our doors to start assisting clients, it was definitely a leap of faith,\u201d she said. \u201cOur national office said, \u2018You are not ready.\u2019 But Madera had already been used to the concept of Love INC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She explained that the organization\u2019s assistance often begins with a referral through Community Action Partnership Madera County (CAPMC), or through the Rescue Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMadera is quite special in a lot of ways and I knew that we would have the support of the community, and the support of the other organizations to be able to open our doors and be able to assist clients without our being fully funded,\u201d she said. \u201cWe weren\u2019t even sure what we were going to do and how we were going to start the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI like to hit the ground running. It\u2019s the only way you learn sometimes, so we had to learn by starting and we were not going to get that hands-on experience and until we did so,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alvarado wasn\u2019t sure how Love INC operated under the prior administration. She was not given much information about how things were handled, and she said they had been disconnected with the national office while they were dormant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTo be honest,\u201d she said, \u201cI wasn\u2019t really familiar with the organization. I didn\u2019t even know Love INC existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen I came in, I had to reestablish that connection. I highly relied on National and their tools and their resources to wrap my mind around the concept of what Love INC is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The board members from the original Love INC remained, and a few were added. Mattie Mendez of CAPMC came on the board the same time as Alvarado was hired. Mendez helps with the interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOur president is Ryan McWherter of the Food Bank. Our treasurer is Sally Bomprezzi, and our secretary is Pastor Jim Garrison,\u201d she said. \u201cWe also have Mattie Mendez, and Heather Betts, Pastor Josh Blair from Central Valley Church, and Pastor Lance Leach from Valley West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Along with the organization, Alvarado has opened a thrift store that also helps clients with supplies and other needs a bit, and also helps with funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe thrift store is kind of my side hustle,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen we started taking on clients, a lot of the needs involved women coming out of the mission or families with infants or with kids who needed help with clothing or shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Love INC, along with its thrift store, is now located in the old Teco building, helps clients by building partnerships with other organizations in Madera. Churches and other thrift stores help supply the needs of the clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI put myself in my client\u2019s shoes all the time,\u201d Alvarado said. \u201cSo, if I\u2019m coming here and I\u2019m feeling vulnerable and emotional, it\u2019s hard to share what I\u2019m going through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a person in need comes to Love INC, the information is recorded and then it is determined how Love INC can help. Alvarado explained that she tries to avoid sending them to different places to get what they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMost of our clients are referral-based. We are very blessed to work with the men who are in the rehabilitation program at the Madera Rescue Mission. They have helped us tremendously with our furniture ministry, picking up donated furniture, dropping off donated furniture, and furniture to families in need,\u201d she said. There are also many church referrals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The four main partnering organizations are CAPMC, Madera County Food Bank, The Madera Rescue Mission, and Workforce Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alvarado has volunteers who help in the thrift store and also with the clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe just actually took another leap of faith, and Deborah has been volunteering here for over two years, since the day I got the job,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Deborah Cole is the connection Center Coordinator, and she works every Saturday. Three other volunteers come in and help throughout the week, and other volunteers help from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The thrift store is open to the public every second Saturday of each month. This helps to provide additional funds for the nonprofit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo, we just want to let people know that we are here. We are ready to serve our community first and foremost. And God has been doing great things with the little resources that we have right now. And we\u2019ve been able to. be a blessing to the community and to invite them to be a part of it,\u201d Alvarado said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou know, Love INC is just a name. We\u2019re just an organization. But without the hands and the feet, like Jesus says, without the hands and the feet, we can\u2019t move and we can\u2019t operate,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, we want to invite individuals, businesses, churches, to say that they want to be a part of blessing families and just restoring hope in any way that we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ceremony for the Grand Re-Opening of Love INC will begin at 4th Street Church, with lunch provided and the guest of honor, Dan Walker, from national headquarters. He\u2019ll be speaking at 2 p.m., and then the ribbon cutting will be in front of Teco\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alvarado has requested RSVP (559) 536-3496 by August 5, to make sure she has enough food for all attendees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGod has plans for us. Along with Station 58, engines from No. 57, No. 56, No. 1 and No. 19 also responded to the fire with another battalion chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere was a bigger response because of the vegetation that caught fire,\u201d Durrell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two residents were taken to the hospital for second and third degree burns, which are considered critical injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, it could have been much worse if not for the action of two residents of the park. Isabel Solis and her son Jonathan helped the two residents, a man and a woman, out of their trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The man, a U.S. Army veteran was heard yelling for help. Jonathan raced to the trailer and pulled him out. Solis went into the trailer to pull the woman out of the trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unfortunately, as this was happening, Solis\u2019 trailer caught fire, and was burnt to the ground, along with their car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOur priority is life saving over buildings,\u201d Durrell said. \u201cWe had some personnel render aid until the paramedics came. Crews extinguished the fire rather quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not only did the firefighters have to deal with the trailers, embers from the fire caught the trash dumpsters on fire and a field across the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But, because of work done on the field, Durrell praised the property owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey disced that field to allow the fire to stop on its own with minimal help from the fire service,\u201d he said. \u201cThey kept the weeds at a minimum that kept the fire from spreading. That fire could have gone to SR 99 and impacted more homes or businesses. They did a good job to maintain the field and the weeds. From the fire service side, it\u2019s something we tell people to mitigate the weeds from their property. It allowed us to keep the fire as small as we could and keep it from going anywhere else. They did the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unfortunately, three families lost their homes, and everything in it. The 57-year-old driver in the Lincoln did not sustain any injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both parties were wearing their seat belts. The college coaches are looking at my times and I have to reach those times. I\u2019m happy that I left my mark at Liberty. This will help so many other girls to accomplish everything they wanted to do there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She helped lead the team to a Div. IV track championship this year. Her track team won three straight Northwest Sequoia Conference titles. She won three NWSL individual cross country championships. She won the Div. V Central Section championship. She was a CIF State Cross Country meet participant three times and a track participant once. She also helped lead her cross country team to the state meet for the first time in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI think I did better than expected,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cMy freshman year, I wanted to come in and be one of the top runners. Each year, I kept going with new goals. I remember my freshman year that I wanted to run at state. I made it my sophomore year. Then, I wanted to make it for track. Track is very competitive because it\u2019s for all divisions together. That was my goal in my senior year. I was so happy I made state this year. I didn\u2019t think it would be possible. It was a big goal of mine because I wanted it so bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In May, Rodriguez finished in the top three at the CIF Central Section Master\u2019s meet to earn a state bid. She ended up 30th in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI didn\u2019t run the best, but when I finished running, I found out someone spiked my foot so I was bleeding,\u201d she said. \u201cI was just happy I competed at state. That\u2019s what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the end of the year, Rodriguez was the hands-down Athlete of the Year for Liberty High School, a title she now shares with her older sister, Jenna, who was the Athlete of the Year in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was really cool. I really wanted it,\u201d she said. \u201cMy sister got it, too, so I\u2019m happy we both got it. I didn\u2019t want to assume anything. I know some of the other athletes were good at their sports, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now, Rodriguez hopes to continue her success at the University of Pacific on Stockton where she will be a member of the cross country and track team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m excited for the new chapter,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m excited to go and explore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rodriguez, who graduated with a 4.38 grade point average at Liberty, will major in health and science exercise with a hope of working in pro sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey have a really good athletic training program,\u201d she said. \u201cIf I continue that, they are also partnered up with pro teams. If things goes well, I can get a job in football or pro sports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rodriguez chose UOP over San Marcos, CSU East Bay, Fresno State and Fresno Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen I went to UOP and it\u2019s a really pretty campus,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s private, and it\u2019s safe on the campus. They had a lot of recovery areas so they know how to make sure their athletes don\u2019t overwork themselves. I think that will be beneficial for me in running.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a roundabout way, Rodriguez\u2019s sister helped her get in contact with the UOP coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI know another coach and he runs the track programs at Chabot Community College,\u201d she said. \u201cHe knows my sister. He is good friends with the head coach at UOP, and that coach reached out to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of Rodriguez biggest accomplishments was to get her cross country team to state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt felt really good to lead the team to state,\u201d she said. \u201cI know a lot of girls wanted to go because it would be their first time. I\u2019m happy we all got to experience it with it my senior year. I got to be able to run at state with my team rather than alone. I think it really boosted them. I really hope they make it again next year and keep moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another accomplishment was helping the Hawks win the Div. IV girls track title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe were all pretty nervous,\u201d she said. \u201cWe weren\u2019t sure how we would do, especially at a meet where you have to give your all to progress to the next one. Me just being there for them and telling them they are going to do good, they know they have the potential. They had the confidence. We kept saying to go together and work together as a team. Even when I finished, I was still there cheering them on. We had a good team dynamic. It was unbelievable to win the title. We didn\u2019t think we could do it. It was like 50\/50. We were really happy we won that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n When Rodriguez entered Liberty, she had visions of playing sports in college, but wasn\u2019t sure if it was in running or soccer. However, running started to outweigh soccer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cRunning is a passion of mine that I wanted to continue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rodriguez was a late signee in the recruiting period. She signed her National Letter of Intent to UOP about a week before the CIF State Track Meet in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI was really worried about where I was going. People were already signing and knowing where they were going. I was thinking school was almost over and I had a few meets left. However, I think it worked out perfectly,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m excited about the next four years. I am moving away from all of my friends. They are heading down to Los Angeles. They are going to be around each other, and I will be north. I will have to be more open and talkative. I\u2019m excited for running. I know I\u2019ll be able to achieve more with better facilities and training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of her biggest supporters was track coach Tony Tynan, who has been with Rodriguez the past four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe helped a lot. When I came in my freshman year, we had to figure out where I was,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter, he already had an idea. Each year, he pushed me, saw me improving and knew how much better I could be. He was really supportive. It felt good to have him believe in me. Sometimes I didn\u2019t believe in myself. It was good to have him cheer me on. It felt good to break all the goals he knew I could do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n At first, her parents were a little skeptical about UOP and Stockton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMy parents are okay with UOP. They were unsure about Stockton because it\u2019s not a safe city. But, when we toured the campus, they were okay. If they were going to chose, they said UOP because it\u2019s the nicest,\u201d she said. \u201cTwo hours away isn\u2019t bad. I\u2019m between my sister and home. She\u2019s in the Bay Area. Aguirre enjoyed his first-career RACER Network-televised triumph in the Mission Pro Late Model Series<\/p>\n\n\n\n Keatin Lyons drew the pole and darted away early while Jarrett Dickson, Wyatt Flowers, and Christensen jockeyed for second behind Lyons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Connor Penix and newcomer Kai Park collided in turn three for a caution on lap 22. Mason Blodgett made hard contact with Hunter Gates trying to avoid. Blodgett suffered race ending damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dickson chose the outside line, lining up next to race leader Lyons for the restart. Dickson used the high side to edge into the lead on lap 23. Lyons battled back, retaking the position on the inside by lap 26. Christensen and Flowers had heavy contact for third, with Flowers limping into the lap 40 break with a flat right rear tire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lyons led Dickson, Christensen, Park, and Gates at the break for adjustments and TV interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dickson tried the outside groove when racing resumed. The move proved successful with the Legends and Outlaw Kart driver charging into the lead on lap 41. Lyons hounded the back bumper of Dickson over the next 12 laps. The duo collided in turn three on lap 52, sending Dickson spinning and relegating both drivers to the rear of the pack. Christensen avoided the incident to inherit the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lyons and Dickson had an additional collision on lap 62, drawing a caution with eight laps remaining, and erasing Christensen\u2019s 2.5 second lead over the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flowers tried the outside of Christensen, but Christensen prevailed across two exciting restarts. Christensen drove to his fourth win of the season, followed by Flowers in a career-best second place. Dickson finished third over a resurgent Lyons with Hunter Gates in fifth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Aguirre, the 2025 Madera Late Model non-televised series champion, earned his first televised win in the Mission Pro Late Models. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Multi-time champion Matt Erickson dominated the first 50-laps of the scheduled 100-lap feature while former Short Track Shootout champion Ethan Nascimento fended off double-duty driver Wyatt Flowers for second into the halfway break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Erickson resumed his dominant place at the front of the field in the second half before Nascimento started to close in. By lap 75, Nascimento had closed to Erickson\u2019s bumper. Erickson got loose into turn one on lap 78, allowing Nascimento to knife underneath to the lead. Erickson then nosed into Nascimento as they drove into turn three with both drivers eliminated from the race with damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additional cautions led the event to conclude with a green-white-checkered finish between Aguirre and teammate Shaun Reynolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Aguirre earned the edge on Reynolds when the field raced to the white flag but Reynolds was undeterred. Reynolds drove hard on the outside of Aguirre into turns three and four, narrowly losing the race to the finish line by a nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Aguirre savored his first career RACER Network-televised victory over Reynolds. Opening night winner Mike Hensley finished third, placing all three drivers into a near dead heat for the championship with three races remaining in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Madera Speedway\u2019s 2026 season continues with the 7th Annual Olga\u2019s California Dream 100 for Pro Mini Stocks on August 15.
