{"id":3234,"date":"2019-03-20T15:45:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T15:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maderatribustg.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=3234"},"modified":"2026-05-13T18:29:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T18:29:27","slug":"lawsuit-against-school-to-push-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maderatribune.com\/es\/lawsuit-against-school-to-push-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawsuit against school to push on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit against a local high school and its district will continue despite a partial resolution of a student complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Student-submitted quotes at the center of the dispute will be published in the Minarets High School yearbook in May, according to Superintendent Darren Sylvia of Chawanakee Unified School District. <\/p>\n<p>But, the ACLU says, the affected students were only notified of this March 13 \u2014 a week after the lawsuit had been filed March 6 and publicized by media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t dropped the complaint even though the most urgent thing at the time was to make sure that our clients\u2019 quotes were in the yearbook,\u201d said staff attorney Abre\u2019 Conner of ACLU Foundation of Northern California. \u201cOur complaint also asked for longer term reliefs to make sure that other students also wouldn\u2019t have to go through something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students Steven Madrid and Mikayla Garaffa appealed by email to the MHS principal and yearbook advisor Jan. 14 after their quotes had been rejected for their yearbook senior pages Jan. 9. Their appeal included a warning letter from the ACLU. <\/p>\n<p>In response, Conner said, the yearbook advisor \u201cdoubled down\u201d on the removal of the quotes and indicated they did not meet the yearbook\u2019s criteria due to being \u201cpolitically divisive.\u201d The advisor also noted they were not fun.<\/p>\n<p>The two students \u201cboth identify as part of the LGBTQ community,\u201d Conner said. Both are members of the Genders &amp; Sexualities Alliance Network, which Madrid founded and leads at Minarets High School.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU is representing both students, but because one of the students is a minor her \u201cparent is on the complaint.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit against a local high school and its district will continue despite a partial resolution of a student complaint.
