The Board of Supervisors proclaimed September as National Library Card Sign Up Month, recognizing the 125th anniversary of the Madera County Library at Tuesday\u2019s regular meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The county libraries serve as a vital lifeline of education and information to strengthen our communities by providing a place for everyone to connect, learn, and grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The library has advanced its services offering Chrome Books, iPads, and a Bookmobile to travel to rural areas providing personalized, comprehensive library services to people who may have difficulty visiting any of the branch locations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In celebration of its 125th anniversary, the Madera County Library, main branch, will feature violinist Patrick Contreras for a \u201cViolin on Fire\u201d concert at 4 p.m. today. The Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office honored three community members for helping out and saving lives, and whose courage and willingness to act made a profound difference when others needed them most.<\/p>\n\n
The three members were honored at a ceremony on September 10.<\/p>\n\n
Just more than one year ago, on Sept. 4, 2025, Romero and Zarco were repairing a tractor near Avenue 8 and Road 23 1\/2 when they noticed thick black smoke coming from the back of a school bus.<\/p>\n\n
The duo immediately alerted the driver, and helped evacuate the students as flames spread through the bus. Romero then climbed back onto the burning bus to make sure every child had made it out.<\/p>\n\n
Because of their quick actions, every student was safely evacuated without injury.<\/p>\n\n
The pair were later honored by the Madera County Board of Supervisors for their selfless courage and bravery, demonstrating the highest ideals of public service, compassion, and community spirit.<\/p>\n\n
Suderman came upon a Madera County Sheriff\u2019s deputy who was being violently attacked by a burglary suspect, Gregory Anguiano, near Avenue 12 and Road 35 on June 19.<\/p>\n\n
An MCSO Sheriff\u2019s deputy arrived in the area, and contacted the suspect, and a confrontation ensued.<\/p>\n\n
During the confrontation, the suspect became combative, and took the deputy\u2019s TASER, and fired it at her, embedding both probes into the deputy\u2019s body.<\/p>\n\n
On the extremely busy roadway, Suderman stopped his vehicle and, without hesitation, came to the deputy\u2019s aid, physically intervening and disrupting the attack at a critical moment.<\/p>\n\n
Suderman placed himself in harm\u2019s way to help someone he did not know simply because she needed help.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cWe are incredibly grateful to the courageous citizens who stopped and came to the aid of our deputy during a violent struggle,\u201d Pogue said in a news conference after the incident. \u201cTheir actions were heroic, selfless, and a powerful reminder of the strong bond between this community and the men and women who serve it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

After nearly 30 years of service to the Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office and the citizens of Madera County, Detective Luis Padgett is finally answering the call for retirement.<\/p>\n\n
Detective Padgett began his career in October 1996, and managed to survive nearly three decades of patrol shifts, SWAT callouts, gang investigations, cold cases, paperwork, and just about everything his profession threw at him.<\/p>\n\n
Throughout his career, Detective Padgett served in patrol in both the mountains and the Valley, was named Deputy of the Year, received the CHP 10851 Stolen Vehicle Recovery Award, twice, and was awarded the Silver Star for Bravery.<\/p>\n\n
He joined the Madera SWAT Team in 2000, and spent more than a decade serving on the team, including as an Assistant Team Leader with the Madera Regional SWAT Team. He also served as a Field Training Officer, helping train the next generation of deputies.<\/p>\n\n
In 2006, Detective Padgett became the first Madera Sheriff Gang Investigator assigned to the MADGET team, working alongside local and state law enforcement partners.<\/p>\n\n
Then came one of his best partners \u2014 DJ. In 2012, Detective Padgett and his four-legged partner completed Narcotics K-9 school, and worked side-by-side in patrol until DJ retired in 2016.<\/p>\n\n
In 2016, Detective Padgett joined the Investigative Team, where he dedicated his time to reopening cold cases and using advancements in technology, science, and DNA to help bring families closer to answers and justice.<\/p>\n\n
But beyond the awards, assignments, and accomplishments, Detective Padgett will also be remembered for his quick wit, smart remarks, and the ability always to have something to say. His coworkers will certainly miss the laughs and maybe even a few of those perfectly timed comments.<\/p>\n\n
The good news for Luis? Retirement means no more learning new employee names. After nearly 30 years, just when he finally got everyone figured out, someone new gets hired.<\/p>\n\n
After 26 years of dedicated service to the Madera Police Department and the City of Madera, Officer Wayson Juarez is officially beginning his next chapter.<\/p>\n\n
Since joining the Department on Dec. 30, 2000, Officer Juarez served the community in many roles, including Patrol, Housing Authority, Community Outreach, Business Watch, Crime Prevention, and as a School Resource Officer.<\/p>\n\n
But his service went far beyond the badge. Alongside his wife, Marie, he spent years giving back to the Madera community \u2014 helping feed those in need, organizing Christmas toy drives, and providing meals, toys, bicycles, clothing, and hope to more than 10,000 people.<\/p>\n\n
Thank you for 26 years of protecting, serving, mentoring, and giving back. Thank you for being there for the people of Madera and for making a lasting difference in the lives of so many.<\/p>\n\n
After 26 years of dedicated service to the City of Madera, Juan Puentes is officially retiring.<\/p>\n\n
He began his career with the City in 2000, and spent more than two decades as a valued member of the Madera Police Department team.<\/p>\n\n
He was responsible for the maintenance, care, and readiness of all police vehicles and equipment, helping keep the officers safely on the road and ready to serve the community.<\/p>\n\n
But Puentes was much more than a skilled mechanic. He was extremely kind, always positive, and always willing to help. His dedication, dependability, and friendly personality made him someone his coworkers could always count on.<\/p>\n\n
Juan leaves behind a legacy of hard work, service, and countless friendships. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the City of Madera and the Madera Police Department.<\/p>\n\n
MPD also wants to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Juan\u2019s wife, Imelda, and their family. Their love and support have been an important part of Juan\u2019s journey and his many years of service to our community.<\/p>\n\n
After 27 years of dedicated law enforcement service, Sergeant Amy Roussell is logging off for the final time.<\/p>\n\n
Roussell began her career with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1999, serving in patrol, vice investigations, and bike patrol before joining the Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office in 2006.<\/p>\n\n
Throughout the past 20 years with Madera County, she has served as a Deputy Sheriff, Corporal, and Sergeant.<\/p>\n\n
From the streets of Los Angeles to the mountains and waters of Madera County, Sgt. Roussell has dedicated her career to serving others, mentoring those who followed, and leading by example.<\/p>\n\n
For anyone who has spent a summer in Bass Lake, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ve seen Sgt. Roussell out on patrol. Throughout the past several months, Madera Police Officers have responded to multiple vehicle burglaries throughout the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As MPD Detectives investigated these cases, they reviewed surveillance footage, followed up on leads, and spoke with residents who provided valuable information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the pieces of the investigation came together, Detectives identified Daren Shore of Fresno as a suspect in multiple vehicle burglaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Shore, along with a search warrant for his residence, on September 10. During the search, investigators recovered several items believed to have been stolen during the burglaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shore was arrested, and booked, into the Madera County Jail on felony charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These cases are a great example of how cooperation between our community, Patrol Officers, and Detectives can help identify those responsible for crimes in our city. The Toros did not turn the ball over for the first time at home, thus scored five touchdowns in Tuesday\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros gained 319 yards of total offense. Adalynn Chavez came in relief of starting quarterback Crystal Galicia, and threw for 170 yards and ran for two touchdowns.<\/p>\n\n
Galicia also threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Galicia and Chavez combined for 227 yards passing.<\/p>\n\n
Karina Contreras led the Toros with 74 yards from scrimmage.<\/p>\n\n
Defensively, the Toros held the Tigers to 215 yards of offense, including 54yards rushing. Except for a 66-yard pass play, the Toros\u2019 pass defense allowed less than 100 yards.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros could have made any attempt of a comeback moot, but couldn\u2019t convert on two chances late in the game.<\/p>\n\n
After a Los Banos punt, the Toros went to work. Galicia scrambled for seven yards, and a first down inside Los Banos territory.<\/p>\n\n
Galicia found Cadence Mortier down the middle of the field for 18 yards to the 16. Galicia hit Victoria Macugay for eight yards. Then, Galicia rolled to her right, and threw a jump pass to Contreras in the end zone for the touchdown, and a 6-0 lead with 4:11 left in the first.<\/p>\n\n
Los Banos then drove 66 yards on 11 plays to tie the game. The Tigers converted a fourth-and-18 with a 25-yard pass to the Torres four. Torres was called for a roughing the passer penalty on third-and-goal. Three plays later, Los Banos tied the game with 10:28 left in the first half.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros had to punt, and the Tigers took the lead. Los Banos got deep into Torres territory with a 38-yard gain to the nine. The Tigers completed a pass in the end zone for a 12-6 lead with five minutes left in the half.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros marched down the field to score before the half. Chavez, on her first snap at quarterback, hit Isabella Perez for a 28-yard gain into Los Banos territory. Chavez found Mortier for 11 yards on fourth-and-10 to the 19. Three plays later, Chavez scrambled, and found running room to the left for a touchdown to tie the game at 12 at the half.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros marched down the field to open the second half. Chavez hit Perez for 12 yards, and a first down. She found Geraldine Cantera-Dominguez for 14 yards, and another first down. Facing third-and-23, Chavez hit Amerie Lujan for 10 yards, and then found her again for 25 yards and a first-and-goal.<\/p>\n\n
Two plays later, Chavez found the right corner on a scramble from a yard out for an 18-12 lead four minutes into the second half.<\/p>\n\n
Contreras returned Los Banos\u2019 punt 31 yards into Los Banos territory. Chavez hit Macugay for 16 yards, and a first down. She hit Milagros Barajas-Romo for 10 to the nine.<\/p>\n\n
With a little trickery, Chavez pitched to Galicia, who threw it back to Chavez for a nine-yard touchdown. Macugay caught a juggling ball in the end zone for the conversion, and a 26-12 lead with 3:45 left in the third.<\/p>\n\n
However, Los Banos got behind the Torres defense, and caught a long pass, and finished it off for a 66-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead by six just nine seconds later.<\/p>\n\n
A Contreras run of 14 yards gave the Toros a first down. Then, Chavez hit Barajas-Romo for 14 yards to the 21-yard line. However, the Chavez threw incomplete on third- and fourth-and-one to turn the ball over.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros forced three straight incomplete passes for a punt.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros drove 55-yards on eight-plays to inside the Los Banos 10. On second-and-17, Chavez found Macugay for nine yards. Contreras got a third down carry for 10 yards, and a first down.<\/p>\n\n
Chavez hit Contreras for a 21-yard gain to the four. The Toros got down to the one, but threw incomplete on fourth down.<\/p>\n\n
Pressure from Jasmin Garcia and Angie Fernandez forced a third down incompletion, and a punt.<\/p>\n\n
Then, the two teams combined for eight straight plays from the Los Banos 30 yard line. Both teams went four-and-out before Contreras carried for six yards to the Los Banos 24.<\/p>\n\n
Galicia took the shotgun snap, and rolled to her left. She was looking to pitch to Chavez on the outside, but found running room against the grain. Galicia cut back to the right, eluded three flag pulls, and found the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown. Galicia hit Mortier in the end zone for the conversion, and a 33-18 victory.<\/p>\n\n
The Matilda Torres Toros flag football team is still trying to find its footing at home with another loss to a team from the Sac-Joaquin section.<\/p>\n\n
The Orestimba Warrios picked off Torres quarterbacks five times, including returning two for touchdowns in a 27-13 victory over the Toros at Toro Stadium on September 10.<\/p>\n\n
Amerie Lujan led the Torres offense with 94 yards on seven receptions, and a touchdown. Karina Contreras caught eight passes for 79 yards.<\/p>\n\n
The Toros\u2019 offense drove up and down the field gained 293 yards of total offense, including throwing for 253 yards.<\/p>\n\n

The Coyotes want the community to join them for a special night as they honor, and celebrate, the life of a beloved teammate, student and friend. Support the team, and show love for Criado\u2019s family and the impact he made. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There will be a lemonade food truck that will donate some proceeds to the Criado family, as well as other fund raising opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll tell you, those on the left never cease to amaze me. They continue to do things that prove to me and many others just how un-American they are as they continue on their journey to radically change the way of life for millions and millions of Americans, and I don\u2019t mean in a good way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A member of the House from Colorado, Jeff Crank, introduced a resolution that would basically condemn socialism in all of it\u2019s forms and condemn the Democrats Socialist Party, which seems to have taken over the party, with very few objections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many of us firmly believe that socialism is the first step towards communism, and that every communist regime has brought only oppression, murder and starvation. The resolution did pass the house with a vote of 220-192. The terrifying part is that 192 Democrats in the House refused to vote against the socialist agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the past, when a resolution like this was proposed, it received almost unanimous support from both sides. The resolution also reaffirmed the support for free, fair and secure elections, and reiterates the notion that American elections are for American citizens-only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The House also recommits itself to upholding the Constitution and calls for the enactment of the Save Act, which would require ID for all voters, which has the support of more than 80 percent of America. And again, 192 Democrats refused to support it. I have my opinions why the Democrats did not support the resolution, I\u2019ll save them for another day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another thing that came to light is the fact that the previous administration has ceased data-sharing agreements with other agencies that would prevent money from being sent to invalid recipients. This included an agreement with the SSA to prevent money going to dead people and the DHS to prevent money going to illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was allowing illegals to receive student aid funds and allowed bots and foreign international rings to steal them. The Trump administration put the agreements back in place, which has saved $30 million off the bat, particularly since dead individuals were no longer getting foreign aid, as well as $10 million from overpayments on Pell grants. It also requires that all students apps that get submitted for aid show an ID to ensure that they are a real person. The Education Department has saved more than $400 million in merely four months through its actions to combat fraud and restore common sense detection measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The blocking of the attempt to socialize America, ensuring fair elections in the country and eliminating fraud are three of the many things that we, as Americans, need to support, and are three things that are very important to myself and millions of Americans. The efforts from the left are doing nothing but damage to America and the way of life we love and have gotten used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vote smart in the election to ensure that they don\u2019t get their way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I\u2019ll take this opportunity to publish a brief update with a couple of factoids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n CAHSRA. <\/strong>Will California\u2019s \u201cbullet\u201d train, the most expensive and slowest in the world, stall in Shafter? An article by Titus Wu, appearing in the New York Post indicates that real possibility. Wu writes, \u201cShafter, a city near Bakersfield, and developer Lennar Homes are plowing ahead with 1,200 homes in the same area off Highway 99 where the state\u2019s rail authority plans to build tracks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition, Julie Watts, reporting for CBS News, points out that the CAHSRA Inspector General \u201chas spent two years and $1.15 million trying to buy $300,000 in standard software \u2014 and still doesn\u2019t have it.\u201d Moreover, Titus Wu claims that costs for the high-speed rail plan have surpassed $200 billion, \u201cthough the rail authority insists the reassessed project cost is $126.3 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n And so it goes with the Slo-Mo Cho-Cho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AVENAL.<\/strong> In April, voters in the City of Avenal recalled four of the five members of City Council, including Mayor Alvaro Preciado. However, Emily Erwin reported in Your Central Valley that all four recalled officials refused to step down. Then there were court decisions and rulings from California Attorney General Rob Bonta. Bonta said that a legal action, Quo Warranto, should be tried in court. Quo Warranto \u201crequires public officials to prove they still have the legal right to hold office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile, City Council, theoretically composed of self-proclaimed Mayor Ricardo Verdugo, the only councilmember who was not recalled, cannot conduct business because it\u2019s been ruled that there cannot be a quorum of one, according to Dom McAndrew in a separate piece for Your Central Valley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n So, as of late August, the four recalled city council members are still coming to work. Erwin says that the process for removing the council members is moving. \u201cThe councilmember are not.\u201d However, in a third Your Central Valley issue, Katherine Phillips reports, \u201cNow, many of those behind the recall fight are gearing up to run for the offices they fought so hard to remove the current leaders from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n YEAR-LONG TIME.<\/strong> It seems that every year, as we prepare for the day when we have to \u201cfall back,\u201d voters get serious about having a single time standard for the country. Iris Kwok of the Los Angeles Times reports, \u201cThe House, in a lopsided bipartisan vote, approved a measure\u2026 to make year-round daylight saving time the default for most of the United States beginning next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Representative Kat Cammack (R-Fla) is cited in the Los Angeles Times article as saying, \u201cThis legislation does exactly what Americans have been asking Congress to do, not just for years, but decades: end outdated practices of changing our clocks twice a year by making daylight saving time permanent.\u201d Kwok reported that the measure passed by a vote of 308-117. She says that a companion bill is being debated in the Senate where its prospects are uncertain. However, in 2022, \u201ca bill to make daylight saving time permanent was approved by the Senate, but the effort stalled in the House.\u201d That\u2019s our government in inaction. Whatever the outcome may be, states have the right to opt out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a Californian, I sincerely hope that the Golden State will opt out of the dual-time system. And either ST or DST is okay with me. I wouldn\u2019t even complain about Greenwich Mean Time, so long as I don\u2019t have to change the clocks in my life twice a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n READING AND BOOKS.<\/strong> Because I write a weekly book-review column, I (have to) read at least a book a week. I made \u201chave to\u201d parenthetical because it\u2019s not a burden. I\u2019ve always read at least 50 books a year, except for years when I was writing textbooks. But, even during those years, I probably read 20 or more novels just for pleasure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n As I may have mentioned in previous columns I didn\u2019t know that there was such a thing as a public library until I was in the third grade. Since then, I\u2019ve been a bibliophile, although the folks at our local library would not recognize me. That\u2019s because I buy books. I like to write in the books that I read. In particular, I write the names of major characters on the blank page at the back of most books. Naturally, I wouldn\u2019t mark-up a library book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I love books, and I\u2019ve very seldom seen a movie that was faithful to or as good as the book on which it was based. But, in truth, some movies have pleasantly surprised me. Sometime in the 1950s, I read Nevil Shute\u2019s \u201cOn the Beach.\u201d In 1959, Stanley Kramer produced a movie, based on the book, and I loved it. I also thought the book and the movie (1963), \u201cLord of the Flies,\u201d were exceptional. More recently, Freida McFadden\u2019s \u201cThe Housemaid\u201d (2022) was released as a movie in 2025. For cinematic reasons, the ending was altered, and I think that was a good decision. I enjoyed both and expressed my opinion in my Wednesday column that \u201cThe Housemaid\u201d would be a breakthrough novel for McFadden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since about 2020, I\u2019ve seen numerous articles proclaiming the death of paper books. However, a recent report by the Pew Research Institute states that \u201cPrint books still dominate in the U.S., but use of e-books and audiobooks has grown over the past decades.\u201d Between Oct. 6 and Oct. 16, researchers interviewed 8,046 adults, a selective sample which \u201crepresents the views of the full U.S. adult population,\u201d according to statisticians. Roughly two-thirds had read a book in the previous 12 months, and 75 percent read at least part of a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the American Booksellers Association, since 2022, more independent bookstores have been opening than closing, and in 2025, 605 such stores opened while only about 65 closed.
