In all, the Toros outscored Wonderful, 98-90, in the four sets.

Tarin Anderson led the Toros with 16 kills out of 49 for the team. She also had five of her team’s 14 aces.

The Toros got contribution throughout the line-up with four other players recording five or more kills. Amelia Specials put down nine kills while Calliope Gutierrez and Mya Lujan had eight each. Freshman Alana Hamman added five.

The Toros helped themselves with just two missed serves all night, both coming in the fourth set, but they also had 20 hitting errors (14 hits out of bounds and six attacks into the net).

Wonderful missed seven serves and hit 11 attacks out of bounds and five into the net.

Wonderful got off to a quick start by scoring the first six points of the set. They maintained the lead until Mia Camarena went back to serve.

After a side out kill from Lujan, Camarena served up two aces, and Specials had a tip kill to cut the lead to two.

However, Wonderful got the side out, and added three more points for a 15-9 lead.

A tip kill from Gutierrez and an ace from Alexa Cervantes cut the lead to four. A side out kill from Lujan, and an ace from Anderson cut the lead to 20-18.

After a trade in side outs, a Specials kill cut the lead to two. Gianna Gonzalez served up an ace, and Gutierrez put down a hard-angle kill to tie the set at 22. Anderson put down two kills, and combined with Hamman on a block for a 13-7 lead.

Wonderful cut the lead down to three after an ace. Gutierrez got the lead back to five with a kill. Destiny Miranda put down a side out kill for a 19-15 lead.

The Wolves cut the lead to one with three straight points, but Lujan recorded a bump kill to give the Toros momentum.

Cervantes served up four straight points with an ace and two Anderson kills to get to set point. After two set points, Hamman finished off the set with a solo block, and a 25-20 win.

In the third set, two Anderson aces after a side out kill tied the set at six.

After a Hamman solo block, Gonzalez served up two points with a Specials kill for an 11-8 lead.

Wonderful put down two kills and two aces to take a 15-13 lead.

After a Torres time out, Anderson put down a side out kill. He accounted for almost 80 percent of McLane’s offense.

Nathaniel Pichardo led the Toros’ offense with 265 yards passing. Warden caught three passes for 88 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown. Joseph Pasillas caught seven passes for 85 yards.

McLane got on the scoreboard first with two runs for 77 yards, and a touchdown just 1:12 into the game.

Both teams had to punt on its next possession.

Torres got a 17-yard pass play to Pasillas. Alfredo Diaz made a tremendous catch off a tip inside the McLane 20, but a penalty nullified the play, and the Toros had to punt.

McLane ran the ball on eight straight plays for 60 yards with the final from 10 yards out for the touchdown, and a 13-0 lead with nine minutes left in the first half.

The Toros finally got a scoring drive after Pichardo hit Diaz for 17 yards on third-and-five. Pichardo hit Pasillas in the flat for a 14-yard gain with a down field block by Jordan Garcia.

However, the drive stalled inside the 10, and Eduardo Jimenez-Magdaleno knocked in a 21-yard field goal with 3:23 left in the half.

The Toros defense got a sack, and forced a McLane punt.

With 41 seconds left in the half, Pichardo hit Warden on the left out of the backfield with a pass in the flat. Warden burst down the left sideline, and outran all of the McLane defenders’ angles for an 80-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Jimenez-Magdaleno’s point after cut the lead to 13-10 with 30.6 seconds left in the half.

McLane got a 40-yard run to start its next drive, and took the ball to the 12. However, they missed a 29-yard field goal at the half.

McLane picked off Pichardo with a pass tipped off of Torres to set up a second half scoring drive. Three plays later, McLane scored for 22 yards out for a 20-10 lead three minutes into the second half.

Torres drove inside the McLane 35, but turned the ball over on downs, and the defense forced a McLane punt.

The Toros turned the ball over on downs at its own 42. The Highlanders drove inside the Torres 10-yard line, but had to settle for a 27-yard field goal for a 23-10 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Pichardo opened the next drive with a 13-yard pass to Garcia. He found Diaz for 17 yards to the McLane 19. Pichardo hit Pasillas on a middle screen for 15 yards to the one.

After a penalty moved the Toros back five yards, Pasillas scored on an end around to cut the McLane lead to 23-17 with 3:35 left in the game.

After a failed onsides kick, the Torres defense gave the offense a chance with two runs for one yard, and an incomplete pass to force a punt.

Pichardo found Keondre Shepherd for 22 yards on third-and-seven to get into McLane territory.

Pichardo hit Warden for six yards on third-and-three with 1:20 left in the game. I am sick of hearing candidates bash each other. Often their commercials have nothing about what good the candidates can or will do. The whole commercial is “mud-slinging” the opponent. It’s disgusting.

If I could vote for a candidate that didn’t do that, I would probably vote for that person. That alone tells me the character of the candidate.

My friend, Bob Jones, who I have quoted many times before, said, “Peace is a bargain at any price.” I believe that to be true.

I think our society these days is anything but peaceful. We may have sporadic times of peace and harmony, but a look at the nightly news tells us we are better entertained when there is turmoil. We gape at the street fights of protestors and criminals. We are amazed at each news story of murder or violation, but the story is the same with just a different twist.

One of my favorite “characters” of the past is St. Francis of Assisi, who was born of a wealthy family in Italy in 1181. The story of his life is a very interesting one. When he was young, he spent his parents’ money lavishly on friends and parties. However, his spending was more out of generosity than selfishness.

Through a series of experiences that brought him to a relationship with Christ, he spent his life caring for the sick, helping the poor, and loving animals. He renounced a life of wealth to embrace radical poverty, and had a deep respect for both nature and animals.

St. Francis of Assisi is known as a man of peace, and is often depicted in drawings and figurines in a plain brown monk’s habit surrounded by birds and other animals. I have a statue of St. Francis in my back yard, among the plants in the planter. I can see “him” through our patio door. It gives me a good, peaceful, feeling to see him out there.

Although he did not actually write the poem known as “The Prayer of St. Francis,” it is a prayer of inspiration for any to focus on a peaceful nature rather than one of bitterness.

Each time I pray, I ask for God’s guidance in whatever I say and do, and I ask him to make me an instrument of his love and peace. I know I have to pray continually this prayer, as we are so influenced by negativity.

For those of you who do not know the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, here it is:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.
