The North Fork Mono Casino officially opened its doors last week, and brings more than gaming to Madera residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not only does North Fork Mono Casino have 2,400 slot machines and 40 table games, they bring a new menu of dining choices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Along with eight choices in the food court, the Casino features two sit down restaurants Madera residents haven\u2019t seen \u2014 a big sports bar and high-end steakhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clubhouse 99 is the place to go for down-home bar-type food, featuring burgers and sandwiches while also viewing the 56 big-screen TVs in the venue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the cornerstone of North Fork Mono Casino is Manzanita Steakhouse that features some of the best meats from around the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur concept is fine dining, but we wanted it to be comfortable, a place that anyone and everyone feels welcome,\u201d said Connor Jessop, Manzanita Steakhouse General Manager. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful, fantastic space for celebrations. It\u2019s a great place to come for birthdays or holidays. It\u2019s also a great place where a group of friends can come for dinner or have a nice business meeting. We have something for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jessop said Manzanita pays homage to the Mono Indian Tribe in the Sierras. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cManzanita is a type of tree that grows in the Sierra foothills where the Mono tribe is from,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the casino features natural outdoor lighting and bright lights in the evening, the atmosphere dims a bit in Manzanita. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have some dim, somewhat fog lamps on the tables, and some stone lamps on the bar to make the place a little more intimate. We have some big, beautiful window to let natural lighting in. It\u2019s not a typical casino,\u201d Jessop said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, what Manzanita strives to be known for is its prime steaks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are getting some nice steaks from Omaha,\u201d Jessop said. \u201cWe also like to feature local ingredients with farm to table. Our spinach salad is a great example. We have local Central Valley almonds in the salad. We have some goat cheese from Rocky Creek. The chef makes his own persimmon vinaigrette, and that comes from the Valley. There\u2019s a lot of local themes going into one dish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Steakhouse also features many seafood dishes with ingredients from all over the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are doing a great job sourcing some of the finest seafood, from our scallops from Japan to our tuna from Hawaii. We are getting kumamoto oysters from Tomales Bay, another great California offering,\u201d Jessop said. \u201cWe have beautiful big shrimp from Mexico. We have lobster tail and crab legs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t forget about the salads and soups for those that want to go in a different direction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have many great salads and some great soups like a corn and crab chowder and a French onion soup with three cheeses. We have a lot of beautiful sides that complement our steaks like Yukon gold potatoes and broccolini,\u201d Jessop said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jessop was brought in about two months ago, and has hit the ground running training the staff. He comes into North Fork Mono Casino with 10 years of fine dining in luxury hotels in Salt Lake City, rooftop lounges in New York City and a few great spots in Southern California. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFine dining is not taught overnight. You would think seven weeks is a long time, but it\u2019s really not,\u201d he said. \u201cThe dedication and effort all of our team members have put into it, to be able to execute this level of service, everyone is going to be impressed. As soon as I got here, it was training time. It\u2019s been great. We\u2019ve been working hard with long hours with the team members. We are very excited to show all of the hard work that we\u2019ve done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to training from within, Jessop brought in a team from Las Vegas to help coach the team members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is a gigantic, beautiful casino,\u201d he said. \u201cThis has been something that has been in the works. This is something no other casino is doing. We are ready for this. The team and I are ready to have everyone come experience this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Manzanita Steakhouse is open Sunday-Thursday, from 5-10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, from 5-11 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For those that want a little less on their plate, Clubhouse 99 is the opposite of Manzanita. The restaurant is bright and welcoming, highlighted by the big screen TVs with sports from all over the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe offer a more elevated sports bar environment,\u201d said Alejandro Alvarez, Front of House Supervisor\/Assistant Manager. \u201cWe also have a good variety menu like burgers, flatbreads, higher-end entrees and some steak options. We will have some wine, from bubbles, whites to reds. We are most excited about our beer. We do have imports, as well as local. We have Riley\u2019s to Oaktown in Oakhurst.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clubhouse\u2019s specialty will be their burgers and specialty cocktails. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will have our Breakfast of Champions. It\u2019s our twist on an espresso martini with tequila. We will have six specialty cocktails,\u201d Alvarez said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alvarez was hired a little over a month ago, and has been able to watch Clubhouse 99 come together from the start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ve seen this from the bones to now. We\u2019re very excited to get everything together,\u201d he said. \u201cIt gives us a great base line to get our team to the standards we want. That\u2019s what we focused on during training. As management, we want to be approachable to the team, and we want them to be excited to come to work. We always want feedback and want to make sure our guests are happy. Any improvements we can make, or experiences, that is what our focus is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madera Unified School District and the Madera Linkage Foundation honored two longtime district employees during the 2026 Student Champion Hall of Fame induction ceremony on October 22, at Madera South High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Established in 2021, the Hall of Fame recognizes former employees whose dedication, leadership and service made a lasting difference in students\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s inductees were Ron Pisk and Ruth Baldwin Lambert, whose careers exemplify the many ways school employees support students and strengthen the Madera community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pisk began his Madera Unified career in 1973 as a social studies teacher and coach at Madera High School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He later served as an administrator at several district schools before returning to Madera High as principal in 1998. During his decade as principal, he helped guide the transition to two high school campuses, expanded career pathways, supported innovative programs and strengthened school pride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He retired in 2008, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lambert began her career with Madera Unified in 1974 as a payroll clerk. Throughout her years with the district, she served in administrative and financial roles, helping ensure district funds supported schools and programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remembered for her dedication, warmth and signature laugh, Lambert demonstrated how behind-the-scenes employees play an essential role in student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Student Champion Hall of Fame celebrates individuals whose contributions continue to inspire future generations of educators and staff. Through its work supporting schools, the Madera Linkage Foundation also helps provide classroom resources, teacher mini-grants and essential items for students and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHP Madera Officers responded to a crash involving two vehicles, on State Route 145, south of Avenue 10 on Thursday, just after 11 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 32-year-old woman from Madera was driving a 2020 Kia Forte northbound on State Route 145, south of Avenue 10. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, a 52-year-old man from Fresno was driving a 2016 Freightliner with attached double trailers, southbound on State Route 145, south of Avenue 10. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At this location, the northbound and southbound lanes of State Route 145 are separated by solid double yellow lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The driver of the Kia failed to negotiate the slight curve in the road, and drove into the southbound lanes of State Route 145, directly into the path of the Freightliner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite evasive action from the driver of the Freightliner, a crash occurred. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The driver of the Kia was not wearing a seatbelt, and was ejected from the vehicle. Despite life saving measures from medical personnel, the driver of the Kia succumbed to her injuries at the scene. A 3-month-old infant in the rear of the Kia was in a child restraint system but not properly restrained. The infant was air lifted to Valley Children\u2019s Hospital as a precaution and with no visible injuries. The driver of the Freightliner did not sustain any injuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This crash is still under investigation. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The California Highway Patrol would like to remind the motoring public that wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself in a crash. Additionally, child restraint systems save lives when used correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madera District Fair parking lot off of Dutra Way and North Schoor Avenue will host the Madera Bulky Waste drop-off event on December 5 from 7 a.m.-noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event is free for City of Madera residents. A current government-issued ID, driver\u2019s license or a utility bill will be required for entry. There is a limit of one visit per household. The maximum vehicle case is a passenger truck. No dump trucks or dump trailers will not be allowed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents are asked to separate metals, appliances, mattresses, electronics, green waste and general trash. No loose debris will be accepted. Box or containerize all materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following items will be accepted: furniture, appliances, metals, wood, e-waste, green waste, general trash and mattresses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following will NOT be accepted: lawnmowers or any other two-strike motors; auto parts or tires; construction or demolition material; any light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; flammable or hazardous material, acids, oxidizers and bases; pesticides and herbicides; hypodermic needles or medical waste; paint and paint thinners; any liquids; batteries or any item containing batteries; dirt, rock sod or asphalt; 50-gallon drums; any items over four-feet in length and items over 150 pounds; and compressed gas cylinders and propane tanks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madera\u2019s Lawrence Flores returned a kick 75 yards to give the Madera Coyotes a 55-54 lead with two minutes left in the game against the Sunnyside Wildcats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Wildcats, whose only win this season was a forfeit win over Justin Garza, drove 77 yards on nine plays to score the go-ahead touchdown with 31 seconds for a 62-55 victory in a rare Thursday night Coyote home game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The loss to Sunnyside may have been a factor in the Coyotes traveling to Templeton on Friday in the first round of the Div. III Central Section playoffs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was also the second straight game for the Coyotes in which the teams combined for more than 100 points, and 1,000 yards of offense. Sunnyside had 617 yards of offense on 87 plays. Meanwhile, Madera had 462 yards on 51 plays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes also had to overcome three lost fumbles that came on three consecutive drives, and two interceptions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madera\u2019s Darius Smith had a second straight game of 200 yards or more with 202 yards and four touchdowns. Flores caught five passes for 125 yards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Coyotes\u2019 defense couldn\u2019t contain the Sunnyside offense. Quarterback Manuel Ortega threw for 209 yards, and rushed for 112 more. Running back Alvin Battiste carried 38 times for 220 yards, and Jeremiah Monia carried 74 times for nine yards, and scored five touchdowns. Sunnyside rushed for 408 yards, and threw for 209. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes got the opening kick-off, and drove 55 yards on eight plays. Elias Mena hit Smith for 10 yards on fourth-and-nine to keep the drive going. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three plays later, Mena found a wide open Flores on a skinny post for a 20-yard touchdown less than three minutes into the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wildcats\u2019 fast-moving offense drove down the field with a 25-yard run. The Wildcats converted on third-and-one, but a Brian Guzman sack, and a Brian Qualls tackle for loss forced a fourth-and-12. Ortega tried to scramble, but Matthew Prince and Jayden Silva stopped him after a gain of three. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, three plays later, Mena was picked off, and Sunnyside drove for a score. After a 19-yard pass play on the first play of the drive, the Wildcats scored four plays later from two yards out. The Wildcats ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the kick-off, Smith took the ball off left tackle, and followed Jayden Perez into the Sunnyside secondary. Smith outran the Sunnyside defense for a 55-yard touchdown run, and a 14-8 lead with 3:16 left in the first quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wildcats scored a minute, 30 later. After a first down pass, and a personal foul penalty, Ortega scrambled to his right and found an open receiver in the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown to tie the score at 14 after the conversion was stuffed for a loss. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, the Coyotes scored quickly. After Mena hit Martinez for a five-yard gain, Mena kept the ball on a read-option to the right. He ran past the Sunnyside defense for a 58-yard touchdown run just 45 seconds after Sunnyside\u2019s score for a 21-14 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wildcats scored on the first play of the second quarter on a direct snap, 52-yard run to cut Madera\u2019s lead to 21-20 after the conversion run was stopped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite a holding penalty on the first play of the next drive, Mena hit a wide-open Flores up the seam. He caught he ball 30 yards up the field with a juggling catch, and ran the rest of the way for a 63-yard touchdown, and a 28-20 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Five plays later, the Wildcats found the end zone with a three-yard run just 1:23 after Madera\u2019s score. They ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 28. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madera faced a fourth-and-two, and went to their short-yardage personnel, and gained eight yards, but Sunnyside stripped the ball carrier of the ball, and recovered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wildcats went on an 11-play, 60-yard drive to find the end zone. The key play was an Ortega scramble for 18 yards on third-and-17. The Wildcats scored four plays later from a yard out to take a 34-28 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately, the Coyotes fumbled on the next play, and Sunnyside recovered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wildcats scored on a fourth-and-six with a 21-yard pass completion into the end zone for a 40-28 lead with 3:20 left in the first half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith carried three straight times for 27 yards to the Sunnyside 12-yard line. However, the Coyotes fumbled on the next play, and the Wildcats recovered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wildcats got a pass interference penalty to give them a chance before the end of the first half, but the Wildcats are stalled at the 26. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Coyotes got a stop to open the second half, and Sunnyside punted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Martinez gained eight on a fourth-and-one, and the Coyotes got a personal foul penalty go move to the Wildcats\u201920. Smith gained 14 to the three for a first-and-goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two plays later, Smith carried fro, three yards out to cut Sunnyside\u2019s lead to 40-35 in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wildcats went on an 11-play, 59-yard drive to find the end zone. They got a fourth-and-five offsides penalty to keep the drive going. Ortega gained two on fourth-and-one. The Wildcats scored from a yard out to open a <\/p>\n\n\n\n
48-35 third quarter lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith opened the next drive with a 12-yard run. Mena found Perez for 12 yards, and a first down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three plays later, Smith ran up the middle from six yards out to cut the lead to 48-42 after a Jayden Perez extra point with 29.1 seconds left in the third. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madera\u2019s defense gave the offense a chance. Ezeyah Lopez and Sebastian Cerrillo sack Ortega for a loss of nine, and force a punt that went for just two yards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mena carried twice for 13 yards. On fourth-and-17, Mena hit Flores for a reception, but it went for 16 yards, and the Coyotes turned the ball over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sunnyside got an initial first down, but was hindered by a holding penalty before punting. The punt went for just 17 yards to the Sunnyside 32. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith got the ball off the left side, and ran over a defender at the 20 for a 32-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 48 with 6:33 left in the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sunnyside went on a 10-play, 63-yards to score. The key play was an Ortega scramble run for 33 yards on third-and-nine. The Wildcats scored from a yard out with 2:24 left in the game for a 54-48 lead after Brett Qualls stuffed the conversion attempt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flores took the bouncing kick-off at the 25. He ran the ball right up the middle, and split the Sunnyside defense. He got the Madera crowd on its feet with a 75-yard touchdown return. Perez hit the extra point for a 55-54 lead with 2:13 left in the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Madera defense forced a fourth-and-10. However, Ortega scrambled for a 24-yard gain with 1:22 left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ortega found a receiver for a 34-yard gain to the 19 on the next play. Sunnyside converted a third-and-six with an 11-yard gain. Ortega scored from four yards out for a touchdown with 36.5 seconds left. The Wildcats ran in the conversion for a seven-point lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHOWCHILLA \u2014 With an undefeated season on the line, the Chowchilla Tribe took advantage of a late Liberty Hawks fumble to score the go-ahead touchdown for a 22-21 victory to complete an undefeated regular season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks had a chance to win the game late after a long kick-off return by Henry Bilskey. However, the Hawks were forced to attempt a 40-yard field goal, and it went wide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tribe jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but the Hawks scored three straight touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chowchilla drove to the Liberty one, and was stuffed. The Hawks tried to drive their way down the field, but fumbled, and the Tribe recovered. It was only Liberty\u2019s third lost fumble of the year, and its fifth turnover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chowchilla quarterback Tristan Beardsley scored on the next play, and ran in the two-point conversion to give the Tribe the win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a battle of No. 9\u2019s, Liberty\u2019s No. 9, Bilskey, came out on top in a battle against Chowchilla\u2019s Nathan Fuentes. Bilskey rushed for 152 yards, and a touchdown. He caught two passes for 40 yards, and a touchdown. He made nine tackles, and returned a kick 54 yards to set the Hawks up for a winning score. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chowchilla\u2019s No. 9, Fuentes, had 15 carries for 76 yards, and scored a pair of touchdowns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Liberty outgained the Tribe, who were the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Div. IV playoffs, 319-252. Quarterback Brody Von Flue also threw for 117 yards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tribe took the opening kick-off, and drove 67 yards on 11 plays to get on the scoreboard. The Tribe only faced one third down on the drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tribe scored from a yard out for a 6-0 lead after the point after was missed with seven minutes left in the first quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks started to drive down the field. Von Flue found Bilskey for 17-yards on third-and-nine. Austin Graham caught a deflected pass for 14-yards on third-and-six. Von Flue found Graham, again, for an 18-yard gain to the Chowchilla 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the drive stalled. Von Flue\u2019s pass to Tyler McCamey went for five yards on fourth-and-nine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chowchilla then went on a nine-play, 81-yard drive to find the end zone, again. The big play was a 29-yard pass play to get into Liberty territory. Beardsley converted a third-and-three with an eight-yard run. Three plays later, Fuentes found the end zone, and ran in the conversion for a 14-0 lead with 10:31 left in the half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks answered the Chowchilla touchdown three plays later. Bilskey got the ball up the middle, and broke through the middle of the Tribe defense. He outran Fuentes to the end zone for a 57-yard touchdown run. Carter Imperatrice hit the extra point to cut the lead in half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks defense forced a three-and-out, but the Hawks also went three-and-out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After an initial first down, the Hawks defense forced a turnover on downs. Benni Lounbandith stuffed the Tribe for a loss of one on fourth-and-three. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Von Flue then sent a pass down the right sideline. McCamey went over a defender to make the catch at the 18-yard line for a 31-yard gain with 14 seconds left in the half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a false start penalty, Von Flue threw a ball to the back of the end zone. The ball went over the Chowchilla defender\u2019s hands, and into the arms of a diving Bilskey in the back of the end zone. Imperatrice\u2019s extra point tied the game at 14 at the half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks were stuffed on fourth down to open the second half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chowchilla got a first down on fourth-and-one to start its next drive. Bilskey and McCamey came up with back-to-back pass break-ups to force a punt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, Von Flue was sacked twice, and had to punt. A holding penalty led to a Chowchilla punt, and the Hawks took the lead after a punt that went for negative one yard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bilskey gained five on third-and-four. Bilskey gained nine for another first down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
McCamey got the carry off left tackle. He went through the first line and bowled over two defenders at the 10, and kept his feet for a 21-yard touchdown run 33 seconds into the fourth quarter for a 21-14 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tribe marched down the field on the legs of Beardsley. He gained 41 yards on three straight carries. He took the ball to the eight for a first-and-goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Felipe Chavarria and Bilskey stopped Fuentes at the three. Beardsley tried to run, but Blayze Ketchum and Deegan Shandor stopped him for no gain. On third down, Levi Marsh got the call on a jet sweep, but McCamey and Tye Davis stopped him at the one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beardsley got the call on fourth-and-goal, and tried to find running room to the right. He tried to get to the corner of the end zone, but McCamey was there for the stuff for no gain, and turn the ball over on downs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks got a first down run by McCamey. But, two plays later, Liberty fumbled, and the Tribe recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beardlsey scored on the next play, and ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-21 lead with 3:27 left in the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bilskey returned the ensuing kick-off 54 yards to the Chowchilla 22. Von Flue threw incomplete on the first play of the drive, but the Tribe was hit with a roughing the passer penalty to move the ball to the Tribe 27. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks only gained four yards from there, and Imperatrice was called for a 40-yard field goal with 1:37 left in the game, but he missed wide left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lightning struck in the area, and the Madera South Stallions induced a 30-minute lightning delay in last week\u2019s battle with the Sanger West Hornets, trailing 21-14 in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With about 10 minutes left in the delay, lightning struck again. According to rules, a game must be without lightning for 30 minutes. Any time lightning strikes in the area, a new 30-minute clock starts. After the second delay, there wasn\u2019t more than about five minutes between strikes, and the game was called with about five minutes left in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On paper, it looked like Sanger West dominated the game on the ground with 292 yards on 32 carries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, of the 32 carries, six went for negative yards, and 12 went for two or less yards. The Hornets had a 78-yard run to boost the stats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the Stallions managed only 128 yards of total offense, including a 57-yard touchdown run by Diego Reyna Navarro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Stallions took the early lead in the game when the Madera South defense, led by a quarterback sack, forced a punt. The punt only went three yards to the Sanger West 35-yard line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Quarterback John Ledesma ran for two on third-and-two. Two plays later, on third-and-five, Ledesma got the carry off right tackle. He made five Sanger West defenders miss tackles, and got a down field block from Jonathan Buendia for a 20-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead three minutes into the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sanger West returned the ensuing kick-off 56 yards, but a penalty moved them back, and threw incomplete on its own 15-yard line to turn the ball over on downs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Stallions had to punt, and Orlando Flores got off a 51-yard punt to the Sanger West 23. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hornets got runs of 25, 19 and 10 yards to get inside Stallions\u2019 territory. The Hornets scored on a quarterback sneak to take a 7-6 lead with 1:58 left in the first quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the fall sports season coming to an end, teams are now focusing on the second season \u2014 playoffs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Champions in girls tennis and girls volleyball will be crowned this week, and water polo playoffs started earlier this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, football playoffs kick-off Friday, and all four Madera-area schools will be in action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Liberty Hawks earned the highest seeds of all of the Madera schools. They took undefeated Chowchilla to the last minute before suffering a tough 22-21 loss Friday night for the Northwest Athletic Conference championship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hawks were moved up from their base Div. V, and earned the No. 3 seed in Div. IV. They host Atascadero in the first round Friday at the newly revamped Hawks Nest. The Hawks are also looking for revenge after Atascadero knocked the Hawks out of the playoffs in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The winner will play the winner of No. 6 North-Bakersfield and No. 11 Exeter on November 13 in the quarterfinals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madera suffered a tough loss last Thursday to Sunnyside, giving the Wildcats their first non-forfeit win of the year. The loss also could have cost the Coyotes a first-round home game in Div. III. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, the Coyotes earned the No. 11 seed, and will travel to the coast to face No. 6 Templeton on Friday. The winner will play the winner of No. 4 Nipomo and No. 14 Righetti in the quarterfinals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Torres played through the rain, and almost came up with an upset victory over Justin Garza on Friday. They earned the No. 14 seed in Div. V, and will travel to No. 3 Orosi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The winner of Friday\u2019s game will play the winner of No. 6 Chavez and No. 11 Bishop Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madera South\u2019s game Friday night was called with about five minutes left in the third quarter against Sanger West because of lightning strikes in the area. The Stallions earned the No. 14 seed in Div. VI, and will play at defending champion, Minarets on Friday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike their counterparts to the south, the Matilda Torres Toros waited out the lightning storm, and played out its battle with the Justin Garza Guardians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After waiting out Friday\u2019s storm, the Toros took a fourth quarter lead only to see Justin Garza come back with a go-ahead touchdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Torres\u2019 37-yard field goal to win the game was blocked in a 22-20 loss to the Guardians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Toros also had to overcome the loss of leading running back Caden Warden, who left the game at halftime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, his reliever, Angel De La Sancha, more than adequately filled in with 138 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Toros gained 237 yards of total offense. However, the Guardians rushed for 95 yards and threw for 200 more, including an 81-yard touchdown bomb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Toros used up the first quarter clock to strike first. Torres went on a 15-play, 75-yard drive to get on the scoreboard first. The key play was an incomplete third down pass, but a pass interference penalty on Garza gave the Toros a first down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
From there, De La Sancha carried four times for 20 yards inside Garza territory. Warden gained 10 on a fourth-and-one. Nathaniel Pichardo found Jordan Garcia for 11 yards on third-and-six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three Warden runs later led to a one-yard plunge for a 6-0 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Garza came back with a 12-play, 81-yard drive to take the lead. Their lead back ran the ball six straight times for 45 yards to the Torres 35-yard line. On third-and-seven, Garza completed a 12-yard pass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Garza converted a fourth-and-one with a five-yard run, and scored on a nine-yard jet sweep for a 7-6 lead after the point after kick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the Toros went three-and-out, Garza drove to the Torres 15-yard line, and settled for a 32-yard field goal for a 10-6 lead at the half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a trade in punts to open the second half, the Guardians converted a third-and-four with a wide open pass up the middle on a skinny post. The receiver took it all the way for an 81-yard touchdown for a 16-7 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Torres came right back. De La Sancha carried up the middle for 33-yards to the Garza 31. He got the carry, again, off the left side for a 26-yard gain to the five. He scored two plays later from a yard out to cut the lead to 16-13 after the extra point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Garza drove to midfield before, but fumbled the snap. Joseph Pasillas came up with it. However, Torres went four-and-out, and turned the ball over on downs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Garza suffered a back center snap for a loss of 24, and had to punt. Torres made good on the next drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three De La Sancha runs gained 27 yards to midfield. Two more runs, and a penalty moved the ball to the 36. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two plays later, De La Sancha went through a big hole on the right side behind Lafayette Webster and Jaxon Denney for a 20-yard touchdown run. Eduardo Jimenez-Magdaleno\u2019s kick opened a 20-16 Torres lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Garza got a pass interference penalty to open the next drive, and then a 40-yard pass to the Torres 17. A 12-yard pass moved the ball to the five, and the Guardians scored two plays later. The point after kick was blocked to give the Toros a chance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pichardo opened the final drive with a pass to Darryn Garcia for eight. Two passes to Pasillas gained seven, and a pass to Garcia gained 14. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pichardo was sacked to force a fourth-and-16. Pichardo hit Pasillas for 26 yards to the 15-yard line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
