Madera’s police force has always been of the highest caliber, so this story is not meant to suggest anything to the contrary. However, even the most vigilant lawman can get caught with his pants down (euphemistically speaking) every once in a while. This is what happened in the early morning hours of Nov. 28, 1952.
Todo comenzó cuando un tal Richard Crowley, un exconvicto de 27 años, y dos compañeros suyos, Richard Albritton y Bert Brouhard, entraron al Pete’s Italian Bar and Café en Chowchilla poco después de la medianoche. El trío viajaba en un auto robado y tenía malas intenciones. Crowley, el líder evidente y el único que andaba armado, sacó una pistola y le quitó al dueño del bar, Bill Matsel, $60 y una botella de whisky. Luego se dirigieron a Madera.
La víctima informó inmediatamente del atraco al jefe de policía local, J.F. Rhine, quien alertó a las autoridades de Madera y Merced.
