Back in the day, as we ancient Americans are wont to say, naming a newborn was easy. There were a dozen or so acceptable names for boys but perhaps a few more for girls.
When my now-50-year-old son was born, we went with the name that was fifth on the list of ten most popular names for boys. But we didn’t know that at the time.
Also, because we chose not to know the sex of our child until he or she was born, we also picked out a name for a girl.
