The Matilda Torres Toros struck first in its football battle with the Madera Coyotes, but the Coyotes scored the next 49 points in a runaway victory at Matilda Torres.
Torres’ Caden Warden scored the first touchdown of the game. The Coyotes scored two touchdowns in a 24 second span to take control of the game for the running clock victory Friday.
Warden led the Toros offense with 109 rushing yards, and a reception for yards. However, the Toros gained 136 total yards and Warden accounted for 93 percent of the Torres offense.
Meanwhile, the Coyotes rushed for 330 yards and threw for 192 yards. They averaged 13.4 yards per play, and gained 522 total yards.
Anthony Estrada led the Coyotes with 184 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 90-yard touchdown run. Darius Smith added 119 yards on just five carries, including a 66-yard touchdown run.
Jayden Martinez scored a rushing touchdown and also caught a touchdown pass. Elias Mena was 14-of-18 for 192 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown.
Both teams had to punt on its first possession. Torres took over on its 39, and methodically drove down the field. Warden gained 18 on a pass out of the backfield. He broke a third-and-two run for 21 yards to the five. Three plays later, and Warden was into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
The Coyotes quickly marched down the field. Mena hit Lawrence Flores for a 20-yard gain. Mena found Martinez for seven.
On the next play, Smith went up the middle, and cut to the right behind a pancake block by Martinez, and another block from Maxton Sally. He strolled into the end zone to tie the game at seven with 39 seconds left in the first quarter.
On the kick-off, Flores stripped the Torres ball carrier, and recovered the fumble to give the Coyotes the ball.
On the next play, Mena found Martinez on the left. Martinez broke an two initial tackles, and another down the field for a 40-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Carlos Ochoa made the second of seven point afters for a 14-7 lead with 16.7 seconds left in the first quarter.
Brian Qualls batted down a third-and-four pass to force a Torres punt.
Madera marched down the field with the passing game, and scored on the ground. Two passes to Flores gained 20 yards. Martinez gained seven and Smith gained seven with receptions.
Smith went behind Martinez for an 11-yard gain. Estrada bulled over a defender for a 21-yard gain, and gained 17 more to the Torres 16. Mena hit Bubba Layton for 13, and then scored on a keeper from the four for a 21-7 lead.
Qualls sacked Torres quarterback Nathaniel Pichardo to force another punt.
The Coyotes converted a third-and-14 with a 31-yard pass to Flores to the Torres 12. Mena hit Flores for nine more to the three. Two plays later, Martinez scored from two yards out for a 28-7 lead at the half.
The Coyotes took the second half kick-off, and marched 76 yards for a touchdown. Mena passes to Martinez and Flores gained 26 yards. Estrada then gained 29 yards to the 21, and a face mask penalty was added to the 11.
Estrada scored off the right side for a 35-7 lead just 2:33 into the half.
The Toros got an initial first down with a Pichardo three-yard pass to Eleazar Camargo, but were forced to punt. Eduardo Jimenez pinned the Coyotes to the 10.
However, the Coyotes have Anthony Estrada coming off an outstanding freshman season. Estrada got the hand off to the right. He cut back to the middle, split the Torres defense at the 15, and outran the defense for a 90-yard touchdown run.
Ochoa hit the extra point for a 42-7 lead with 5:14 left in the third.
The Torres initially had to punt, but a muffed punt led to a Torres recovery. Warden gained 13 yards on a run, but the Torres threw incomplete on fourth down.
On the fourth play of the fourth quarter, Smith got the hand-off. He broke the tackle at the line of scrimmage, broke an ankle tackle eight yards down the field. He cut across to the right sideline at midfield for a 66-yard touchdown run for the final score of the game.
