Last weekend a friend of ours was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident. He was a dear person to many, leaving behind his wife of more than 51 years, and many family members and friends. We are still reeling at the news of his loss.
It is times like these when we realize a need to take a look at life and the people we love, and remember to show our appreciation for each other. It is a time for love and support of one another.
I remember another tragic accident from a few years ago. It is fresh in my mind today. A married couple I knew in another city were both in their early 60s, and they loved to go riding motorcycles. They took a ride one morning and had an accident that killed both of them. It was a devastating time for their friends and family. They were well-loved in the community.
Nearly every day we hear of tragedies, in the news, or in our own circles of friends or family. A loved one is ripped from our lives, and never to be seen again, at least in this life.
I am grieving now for the loss of our dear friend, and I pray for his wife, also our dear friend, who was left behind to live her life without him.
It is hard to know how to help one who is left so numb at the loss of another. I know she has many friends and family who want to help and are hurting for her. Often, our prayers are all we can offer in the short run.
We are often blinded by these losses. When tragedy strikes, it is hard to see the light shining for us. Grief can run deep, but God knows more than we know ourselves, and only he knows what lies ahead or the reasons for tragedy. There are blessings we cannot see through grief.
I pray for peace and comfort for my friend, and that God will give her a light that shines through her and gives her the strength she needs in the coming days and weeks.
We are all blessed in so many ways, but when our friends are hurting, we hurt too. Love and support are what we need in times of loss.
If you know someone who is grieving, be available to help in any way needed. If there is nothing you can do right now, wait. There will be something you can do later.
