Madera baseball players excelling in pro ball

Former Madera Coyote standout Alec Gamboa currently holds a 1.47 ERA in 10 appearances with the Boston Red Sox this season, including his first career start.

With a month-plus left in the Major League Baseball season, Madera’s Alec Gamboa is getting some time with the playoff-driven Boston Red Sox during their playoff run.

Gamboa was most recently called up August 12, and has remained on the roster for three appearances without allowing an earned run.

He had five appearances in three different call ups from Triple-A Worcester in July.

With his most recent call-up, Gamboa has made three appearances for the Red Sox. On the day of his call-up, he tossed a scoreless inning.

Two days later, he tossed three innings in relief. He allowed an unearned run on two hits.

Gamboa got his first career big league start on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He tossed the first 1 1/3 innings as the opener in a 10-0 victory.

This season, Gamboa has appeared in 10 games with a 1.47 ERA. He has 13 strikeouts against five walks over 18 1/3 innings. He has allowed three earned runs with one home runs over 14 hits.

Gray hits slight roadblock

Former Madera South and Fresno State standout Murf Gray started off the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Single A affiliate Bradenton where he earned a Player of the Week honor.

After hitting .359 with home runs and 34 RBIs in the first 38 games, Gray earned a call-up to Single-A-plus affiliate, Greensboro Grasshoppers, on May 19.

Gray played 43 games with Greensboro, and hit .302 with 15 home runs and 36 RBIs. He was also named the South Atlantic League’s Player of the Month for June.

After about two months with Greensboro, Gray earned a call-up to the Pirates’ Double-A Affiliate, Altoona Curve on July 17.

In 25 games with Altoona, Gray is hitting .217 with four home runs and 11 RBIs.

In his first 106 games of his professional career, Gray is hitting .304 with 27 home runs and 81 RBIs over three levels. He has 22 doubles with 85 runs scored while manning third base.
