Food bank has new home
Saturday, October 31, 2009
By Ramona Frances
Madera County Food Bank volunteers, staff and friends celebrated the opening of a new location with cheering and a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday.
The new site, at 225 South Pine St., includes 10,000 square feet of warehouse to store canned food, a walk-in freezer (moved from its previous location) and office space with a no-leak roof and ceiling. The new building is closer to Madera and accessible to people using public transportation.
The ribbon-cutting event was orchestrated by Debi Bray of the Madera Chamber of Commerce. Bray challenged each person at the event to find 10 people, including businesses and organizations, to take a larger role in donating food to the local food bank this year.
"Food is needed all year round but the demand becomes greater during the holiday season," Bray said. "People rise to the surface during this time of year to give more."
