Heartland kicks off holiday food, toy drive

Helping their community gives people with disabilities a sense of purpose. At its annual Halloween dance, Heartland Opportunity Center kicked off its Heartland Rotary Community Corps annual toy and food drive, Thursday.

Everyone who brought non-perishable food to the dance received a special treat, said Janis Armstrong, chief financial officer for Heartland.

This year the food that is collected will go to the Ronald McDonald House at Children's Hospital Central California to stock its cupboards, while the toys will go to United Way to help families in Madera United School District.

Throughout December all toy and food donations may be dropped off at the Heartland recycling centers at the Save Mart shopping centers and near the City of Madera Parks and Community Service Office, 333 West Olive Ave. For more than 38 years Heartland Opportunity Center has provided employment and training in living skills to disabled adults.
