FRESNO — “It sounded like you brought the whole band with you,” said TV host Kopi Sotiropulos, after Kevin Yang of Madera’s sister city did a live demonstration of the Sheng during the broadcast of the Great Day program on KMPH Friday morning.
Yang and fellow Formosa Melody Music Center musician Felix Chang had just finished playing some short music excerpts on the Sheng (a small, handheld instrument similar to a pipe organ), and the Ditzi (a bamboo flute) on live TV in the Fresno studios of KMPH Channel 26.
The segment provided the Central Valley with a preview of the musical events taking place in Madera this weekend, which includes the main concert Sunday night at the Madera South High School Performing Arts Building.
Yang and Chang are from Madera’s sister city of I-Lan, Taiwan, and are performing with six other musicians as part of the group’s visit to Madera. This is the third visit to Madera for Yang and Chang, who first started coming here as junior high students. Yang said he looks forward to visiting Madera each time...
