Hawk Talk: Liberty High works for cure
Thursday, October 29, 2009
By For The Madera Tribune - Victoria Bisbee
Liberty High School's volleyball team raised awareness for breast cancer Thursday at the game against Washington Union. The team joined forces with The Side-Out Foundation in order to raise money for the cause.
To support the cause, both teams ordered special pink uniforms and students had a special pink spirit day at school. Giveaways and raffles went on for attendees of the game. By the end of the night both, the Liberty High volleyball team and The Side-Out Foundation surpassed their goal of $500 raised.
Another attempt at raising awareness for breast cancer was the Golden Valley Unified School District's involvement in Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure. Liberty High English teacher Rebecca Harp-Sligh was the team leader of GVUSD for the Cure, a group of people who either walked or ran in the 3.3 mile race. It was a great success and many participated.
An upcoming event at Liberty High School is the Mr. LHS Competition, which will take place during the week of Nov. 2 through 6. For this competition, there will be a set of contests, which include competitions in the categories of talent, evening wear and interview. Much like the Miss USA Pageant, the winner will be crowned Mr. LHS.
